I always create my true first drafts as screenplays. I wrote about it here (ricperrott.com/stories-as-s...). But one of my big issues is has always been trying to sound "writerly" and that's usually when I get into trouble!

I don't know if I am paraphrasing this, or stealing it outright, or if I came up with it myself, but I think about this a lot whenever I begin something new:

"Writing is just thinking out loud, and then removing the parts where you're trying too hard."
