Our first civics lesson of the school year was last week! This year, Secretary Amore will be teaching a lesson on the Declaration of Independence to help commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. Thank you to Pilgrim High School in Warwick for having us.
Two of the most influential documentary filmmakers sat down with students from the RI Civic Leadership Program yesterday in the State Room. Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein, directors of the upcoming series The American Revolution, took questions from students during a panel moderated by Sec. Amore.

The State Archives also displayed two of Rhode Island’s unique documents - the Act of Renunciation and the Declaration of Independence.

Had to stop by Cafe Amore in Pawtucket last week! We came for the name on the sign but stayed for the delicious food, great service, and extravagant coffee. Secretary Amore presented owner Heather Gwynn with a citation to recognize her and her team for their recent opening.

This school year, Secretary Amore taught the history of voting rights to more than 40 classrooms across Rhode Island! Hundreds of students learned the value of a vote and why they should participate in elections when eligible. Thank you to all the schools and teachers who hosted us!

Visit the RI State House Charter Museum where “Brave Men as Ever Fought” is currently on display. This magnificent painting, on loan from The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, depicts the first integrated regiment in American Military history- 1st RI Regiment.
March is Women's History Month! Visit the State Library and explore the Women in Our History exhibit to learn more about Rhode Island's historical figures. The State Library is located on the second floor of the State House.

I was happy to start the day by addressing the RI Academic Decathlon at Bryant University. What a pleasure to be around such bright, inquisitive, and hard working young people. Seventeen high schools, made up of RI’s future innovators and leaders, competed today.
This week, Secretary Amore taught civics lessons at two schools and stopped by Mt. Hope High School to see students' civic action project. Three students organized a voter registration drive for classmates. It's great to see them putting what they have learned into practice.

The Rhode Island Commandery of the Military Order of Foreign Wars was established 125 years ago by Admiral Stephen Bleecker Luce. Today, Secretary Amore participated in a ceremony to pay tribute to its founding. Our State Archivist also had Rhode Island history on display.
Our Civic Leadership Program is off to Boston today! Students are participating in a mock Senate session at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The award-winning Senate Immersion Module uses negotiation and debate skills to teach about the legislative process.
Today, on the 22nd anniversary of the Station nightclub fire, we honor the 100 victims and the countless individuals impacted by this devastating loss. They are never forgotten.
