Last week, the International Criminal Court sentenced Ali Kosheib, a former leader of Sudan’s “Janjaweed” militias, to 20 years in prison.
Kosheib’s case should bring renewed global attention to the need for justice across Sudan.
As part of its 18-month siege of El Fasher, the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan dug a trench and built a sand berm around the city. Since RSF captured El Fasher, HRW documented and geolocated videos near the berm to the northwest — videos that could be used to prove crimes.

2 jours avant la grâce, le président guinéen a publié décret pour indemniser les victimes des crimes de 2009. Bien qu'accueilli favorablement, ce décret se limite à 334 victimes, conformément à la décision de justice, privant ainsi centaines d'autres de leur droit à réparation.
Malgré la lutte acharnée menée par les victimes & ONGpour obtenir justice, @presi_doumbouya a gracié Dadis Camara en mars et l'a libéré de prison. Cette grâce a surpris la Guinée et a été rapidement critiquée par

Two days before the pardon, Guinean president passed a decree to compensate the victims of 2009 crimes. It was welcomed by many, albeit limited to 334 victims per the court order, excluding 100s of other victims from benefiting from their right to redress.

Despite a relentless fight for justice by the victims and CSOs, President Doumbouya pardoned Dadis Camara in March and released him from prison. The pardon came as a surprise in Guinea and was swiftly criticized by the UN and others, including @hrw.org.

One year on, the appeal in this landmark case remains pending--all parties have lodged appeals, including Camara. President Doumbouya should express his clear commitment to enable Guinean judicial authorities moving forward independently and expeditiously with the appeals process.
The historic verdict—including the conviction of Dadis Camara as the commander in chief who oversaw the 2009 crimes and his sentence to 20 years in prison—was hailed by many Guineans and international partners of Guinea of at least some measure of justice.

In spite of the odds, victims and survivors, activists, communities keep showing up to demand justice.
