Learning about science is always rad. But as the Animal-Microbe Symbiosis GRC wraps up, I'm most excited about whom I get to do that science with.

Science has published a letter I helped write, as part of Advancing Queer & Trans Equity in Science (AQTES), about why it's important for universities & other institutions to protect trans and gender-nonconforming scientists, and some practical things they can do.

SpaceX rocket cargo project puts Pacific seabirds in jeopardy A project proposed by Elon Musk's SpaceX and the U.S. Air Force to test hypersonic rocket cargo deliveries from a remote Pacific atoll could harm the many seabirds that nest at the wildlife refuge, according to biologists and experts who have spent more than a decade working to protect them.

I was a member of the Crazy Ant Strike Team on Johnston Atoll in 2019

It is sickening that Elon & SpaceX are planning to decimate decades of SUCCESSFUL invasive species eradication, and a truly remarkable rebound of several species of critically endangered seabirds, all for 10 rocket missions

Trump to Americans: F*ck Clean Air and Clean Water and Clean Energy πŸ₯Έ An environmental news roundup of the 1st two months.

ICYMI an environmental news roundup. A downer, but it's important to know what's going on.

Important: Most of this isn’t final. It will be litigated in the courts. Stay tuned...

Keep speaking up! Keep pushing your members of Congress! It's making a difference.

Make sure they know they are valued and protected, both as scientists and individuals. Ask them about their concerns and how you can use your positions of power to help. This is not the time to go back to a former, broken, status quo for the sake of your science.

A reminder to US scientists: yes, your research is at risk. It's terrifying. But these efforts are systematically targeting programs meant to broaden access to science. This is the time to check in with BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, and international students and colleagues in your departments.

Make them tell you, specifically, what you're not allowed to do. Don't make changes you guess that they want. Don't offer them a menu of things that you infer they might be telling you not to do. Do the work you proposed, and received funding to do, unless instructed otherwise in specific detail.

Folks who are mentoring undergrads looking into PhDs:

Encourage them to pursue programs with Grad Student Unions.

Healthcare and other benefits are union granted. In the next few years, collectivist action is going to be vital, and the encouragement that others are on your side is indelible.
