What's interesting about these refugees is that, once they get exposed to the kind of anarchism the Commune operates under, it opens their eyes to how much better life could be led, so most of them stay.
Absolutely! The Orchana Commune has regularly been a site for refugees to flee to if possible. This includes Humans and other peoples in my setting!

If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kΔkΔpΕ chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!

Israel is bombarding, literally bombarding, two Middle East capitals, Beirut and Tehran, killing 100s of civilians, and yet the US and UK media continue to portray Iran as the threat to the region.
Israel has nukes, but Iran is the nuclear threat.
We live in Orwellian times.

To answer your question about greed and cruelty specifically, the closest example I have now are the Cinder Union; Orchana communards who consistently push towards an eternal revenge war against the empire that once enslaved them, wanting its total, complete annihilation.
Every society has its problems, and the Orchana Commune isn't exempt! They are DEVOUT industrialists, and industrialism is something that they respect almost exclusively. There is no Gemorrian devotion to ecology and environmentalism here.
The Orchana Commune's mining operations have also garnered a bit of an international renown; through osmosis, mining across the world has been getting incrementally better, which is a part of the Commune's soft power strategy in geopolitcs.
But we'll get to that later this month. /end thread
Mining is a fundamental pillar in Orchana culture; most people know someone working in the mines, or have family members who are miners. Adolescent education involves children visiting the mines and learning about their operations (NOT working in them, though!)
Since the Commune is an anarchist society, no-one is getting paid or rewarded in a way that would create economic hierarchies. Within the commune, you never have to worry about healthcare, housing, food (to an extent), and having a social life outside your job.
Think of mining in the real world being transformed into one of the most prestigious jobs to hold. Excellent working conditions, excellent safety protocols, a lot of socio-religious culture surrounding the mining and processing of Cogitix.
Cogheads helped them oust the empire, and Cogitix, in turn, transformed them into the free society they are now. As such, Cogitix mining is one of the most respectable, honourable, and IMPORTANT jobs for the Orchana communes.
Critical history has to be understood; the Trolls, Orcs, and Goblins started mining Cogitix as slaves for the empire that colonised the mountain range. That fundamentally impacts how Cogitix mining is undergone in their post-empire, anarchist society.
Day 6 of #Marchistics! I've already explained the kind of roles the individual peoples of the Orchana Commune generally fulfil when mining Cogitix. So today, I'm going to delve deeper into the kind of mining culture that the Commune possesses today. π½

Considering how illegal this is, how do they hide the smell from the public and the Inquisitors? Because in my mind, once that smell wafts away from the hidden locations, it's almost impossible to get rid of it immediately

The extraction process for saltpeter is largely the same as it is in reality.
The main twist is that since all of this is shockingly illegal, it all has to be done in secret, or obfuscated in some way.
The manufacturing of fertilizer is a common dodge. π§΅
Mining ops in space for ores take place in hardy roving mining fleets. Ships of course vary in sophistication and safety depending on wether they're Alliance or external. Alliance ones mostly look for heavy metals, while externals are not as picky.
#Marchistics 5. Boring answer, but yes, it's pretty much the same as far as I've envisioned it.
Moonstones are soft rocks, which requires more care (also because of their rarity and properties), so we're looking at chainsaws and other stone-cutting machines to extract (1/5)

5: For quickdust in Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social), ephedra and erythroxylum can come from just about anywhere, growing all over Karnassia. While traditionally quickdust can be pulled from below the sand of the Avenad desert in shallow "mining" operations...

Iβm afraid today is probably going to be pretty boring, because, well, itβs old-fashioned ore extraction, without the modern earth machines to do it. Itβs mostly extracted from the surface via quarries and open-pit mines, rather than underground mines.
