Harper to the judge: "Your driver's license doesn't list your height and weight at birth. It doesn't list where you used to live. It identifies who you are now."

It has been a Very Bad Week (minus that butch heiress subplot) and my refrain has been β€œAll I want to do is lie in bed with my cat and maybe look at a bug on a flower”

I just saw bugs on flowers and now I am in bed with cat!!! Wishes do come true!

In 2024, the most common careers among previous postdocs were in research associate/staff scientist positions (30 per cent) and the public service (20 per cent), with only 15 per cent in tenure-track roles. This means that most doctoral graduates do not follow the so-called traditional academic career trajectory. So, are our institutions equipping us with the professional development needed to secure these early career positions?

Our data reveals that previous postdocs received training in career development (25 per cent) and research ethics (22 per cent), but less so in networking (14 per cent in 2024, versus 25 per cent in 2020). Yet 26 per cent of postdocs said that networking is an area of training of special interest to them.

15% of postdocs landing tenure-track roles is really quite bad, as is only 22% getting training in research ethics.

Im a historian of vaccination.
Every semester/year since 2015, I teach the histories of smallpox vaccination.
And every semester/year, I have had anti-vaxxers/vaccine hesitant people in my classes.
If I want to change their minds, telling them how evil or stupid they are isn't going to cut it.

Shah Alam was found dead in late February.

Here in Cook County, IL, there's still no announced state or county investigation into the ICE agents who killed Silverio Villegas GonzΓ‘lez last September. We don't even know their names.

There’s some conceptual mobius strip going on, where poasters are angry that vax-hesitant people won’t listen to experts, but ALSO the poaster… refuses to listen to experts?

I seek out leucistic and albino animals, mostly because as a baby biologist I was taught they were extremely rare because parents should kill their weird-looking offspring, and I love the reminder that that's not how nature actually works

and yet every time my brain does go "EXCUSE ME"

I’m in Upstate SC working directly on the measles outbreak. What’s helping reduce cases lately isn’t writing parents off. It’s clear, credible communication that addresses confusion and misinformation. Many families just need trustworthy information from leaders they trust.

man, @publichealthguy1.bsky.social was (afaik) the first former CDC person to publicly call *explicitly* for RFK's resignation, rather than gently scold him, and he's currently being called a piece of shit and dogpiled for saying vaccine hesitant parents are facing a bad information environment

If you wanted to have a genuine conversation about this you probably shouldn’t have started with β€œthis piece of shit”

I would put big money on him having you muted (the healthy response to strangers picking fights, imo), so idk if quote-tweeting demanding polite conversation is getting you anywhere

When someone says β€žScientists do not want you to knowβ€œ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
