Another clip from this week's episode: When Counting Wildlife Gets Complicated.
Estimating wildlife population density is far trickier than it sounds. @adamfsmith.bsky.social explains why there is no single reliable method, using Eurasian lynx as an example.

Remote‐Control Science in Ecology: A Hidden Face of Scientific Neocolonialism We introduce the concept of “remote-control science” as a modern form of scientific neocolonialism in ecology, where researchers, preferably from the Global North, control projects in the Global Sout...

Remote-control science is an internet-enabled form of "parachute" science

FWIW, I see a lot of this in AI and macroecology research

Hi @djiglobal.bsky.social I will ask you something. I've seing so many people diving that get too close to th animals to get a better video or photo. I know this is on them, but can you make a digital or manual zoom for your cameras so they dont need to be that close? Ty!

Headline: A billion lives in the balance: How we prepare for unbearable heat will shape the century.

Opening image: A cyclist uses a public water fountain to fill their water bottles in an urban setting. In the background, a woman with dark hair pulled back in a ponytail walks by carrying pink and white shopping bags.
Intro: More than 1 billion people live in areas where the heat and the humidity will surpass the survivability limit by the end of this century. For comparison, the COVID-19 pandemic killed an estimated 15 million people in its first two years, according to the United Nations. So, such extreme heat could be orders of magnitude worse than the pandemic in terms of mortality if the world does not prepare for...
