Just been out for the last dog walk and saw these two rather fine-looking chaps (or chapesses?) on the path. Went back out with the camera, turned on the flash, pointed, and hoped for the best. Came out better than I expected!

Face of mystery man found dead in Claerwen Reservoir reconstructed Detectives hope the new facial reconstruction images will end an 18-month mystery.

It still blows my mind when someone is found dead and there's no obvious match to a missing person report. No friends, no colleagues, no family, have reported the absence of a great big bloke who liked swimming?

Photo of wrenthrush. Description from ebird: β€˜A strange little understory bird, unmistakable if seen well. Plump and very short-tailed, like a small antpitta or wren. Mostly gray with olive back; most distinctive feature is orange crown. Sexes alike. Found in high-elevation forests from 1500m to treeline, often around bamboo, and always close to the ground. Listen for high, thin calls.’

'Crocus' by Raymond C. Booth 1962

An oil painting in dark, muted tones. Purple crocuses growing up from the ground covered in dead leaves, with a bird skull resting among the young flowers.

If you were life, my darling,
And I your love were death,
We'd shine and snow together
Ere March made sweet the weather
With daffodil and starling
And hours of fruitful breath;
If you were life, my darling,
And I your love were death.

– A. Swinburne, 'A Match' 1866

We are losing stars one streetlight, one neon sign, one suburb at a time For most of human history, the night sky has been a shared inheritance, a source of wonder. Now, more than a billion children see barely any stars in the night sky above their homes. So what does that...

β€œYou understand your place in the universe very quickly when you look at something 1 billion light-years away … and realise that those photons, they predate dinosaurs, they predate humans, they predate the continents,”
