Photo of 11 volunteers from your downtown Guelph friends standing behind some tables that are dusted with freshly fallen snow. A beautifully framed photograph of Kate Nixon is on the table in front of the volunteers. The tables are set up at the edge of a sidewalk in downtown Guelph. The volunteers are all smiling beneath n95 respirators as snow gently falls around them.

Yesterday, just one day after we attended the funeral for our dear friend Kate, we gathered together for our Sunday meal service—an act of care that she poured her heart into every day as the founder of Your Downtown Guelph Friends. As the snow gently fell, we gathered in community and welcomed some new volunteers as well as the return of some friendly faces.

Losing Kate has left an ache in all of us, but coming together, sharing food and love, and continuing her work brings a sense of comfort. It reminds us that grief doesn’t have to be carried alone. Showing up for each other, just like Kate always did, plays a big role in how we can move toward healing.

Kate’s spirit is with us in every warm meal served, every kind word shared, and every moment of laughter that slips through the sorrow. We love you, Kate. Thank you for showing us what it means to show up with heart. 🫶🏻
