A still from the H is for Hawk movie with Claire (as Helen) looking through a rolled-up magazine at a playful goshawk on a perch
Oh this is LOVELY. Claire talking about her role in H is for Hawk. She is not only an astonishing actor but an extraordinarily accomplished natural hawk-handler, entirely in tune with the birds

Wikipedia Says AI Is Causing a Dangerous Decline in Human Visitors
βWith fewer visits to Wikipedia, fewer volunteers may grow and enrich the content, and fewer individual donors may support this work.β
Wikipedia is seeing a significant decline in human traffic because more people are getting the information thatβs on Wikipedia via generative AI chatbots that were trained on its articles and search engines that summarize them without actually clicking to the site

Another likely Fox trail in snow, again direct register
A chart of gaits via nature identification.com
Same Fox trail up close
A fox trail, perhaps, in the snow from above. Itβs a tight efficient line.
When you have wild tracks in the same area where domestic dogs are walking, I think it's cool to compare the meandering and playful gaits of domestic dogs vs the sharper direct register gaits of wild animals. Here are a couple more fox tracks (I think) from this snowy time in Maine.

A fox print in the snow, and my hands for scale.
A patch of snow and a fox trail passing through it.
They often display βdirect register,β meaning they place their back paw exactly where they stepped with their front paw. Other animals do this too, like coyotes, bobcats, and domestic cats. This is a tight, efficient gait.

The other day, I had an encounter with a fox in a field. I want to share something I find special about foxes: their tracks.
