which is fine— no one's entitled to anything from him— but the series as a whole did suffer a major blow in quality bc of that.

if you're talking strictly about the anime, not the manga, this comparison is (more) apt.

the manga erodes at most of the series' strengths post-Shibuya. It starts to suffer from classic problems: power creep, character bloat, rushed pacing, seemingly random developments etc.

this feels like a consequence of broadcast format rather than artistic intent. not that the end result is different bc of that.
