Seedbanks of wild species are instrumental for conservation, but their intraspecific genetic diversity 𧬠is often poorly understood. Our new opinion piece explores... 1/

#consgen authority Fred Allendorf cries out in despair for American science in the Missoulian newspaper. Itβs terrifying to watch this destruction unfold day by day. My heart goes out to my American colleagues and friends. Stay strong and fight.

The widely recognized extinction debt problem in community ecology depends on delayed genetic responses (genetic extinction debts/time lags) in the populations of that community. Therefore, genetic extinction debts at the population level deserve more attention /5
*Why it matters:*
Recognizing genetic extinction debts is crucial for effective conservation, both when monitoring genetic diversity and when taking actions to restore genetic diversity in populations /4
*Challenges in interpretation:*
Confounding factors, such as sampling strategies and marker choice, can obscure these debts and lead to misinterpretation. We propose a framework to guide better analytical approaches and to improve the interpretation of genetic extinction debts /3
*What are genetic extinction debts/time lags?*
These are delayed genetic consequences after environmental disturbance. Life-history traits such as long lifespan and vegetative propagation can favour time lags /2
β¨Excited to share our new article on time lags/genetic extinction debts, online now in Trends in Ecology & Evolution

This cool new paper by @roberta-gargiulo.bsky.social explains why and how conservation strategies should account for this π§ͺπ
3/ An extinction debt also occurs when gene flow in a metapopulation drops below 1 MPG. This doesn't reflect a deviation from mutation-drift equilibrium, but from migration-drift equilibrium in the metapop. A drop in gene flow reduces the realized inbreeding Ne of the subpopulation.
2/ if allelic richness is smaller than expected from the observed He there is a pending extinction debt
The same principle applies to Tajima's D (haplotypes) or the Site Frequency Spectrum (SNPs).

A bottleneck test is also a test for a genetic extinction debt 1/ at mutation-drift equilibrium Ne predicts allelic richness AR and gene diversity He and vice versa

LetΒ΄s form a community of conservation geneticists here - I started with some people I know, but there are likely to be many more... I can happily add them to this list
