Only 21% say they have "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in the Court; 79% say they have "very little" or only "some" confidence. (Economist/YouGov, n=1623)

"[T]wo voting rights groups are sounding the alarm, warning that eliminating Section 2, a provision that prohibits racial gerrymandering when it dilutes minority voting power, would let Republicans redraw up to 19 House seats to favor the party and crush minority representation in Congress."

Time to tune-in to SCOTUS's oral argument audio because today is Chiles v. Salazar; a case about Colorado's ban on conversion "therapy" for minors. More than 20 states have similar bans--which fall under state powers to regulate medical care. www.supremecourt.gov/oral_argumen...
This past term, the Supreme Court undermined one of the most sacred tenets of American democracyβthe separation of church and state. Recent rulings have created a system where religion and government are not separate, but instead increasingly intertwined. www.americanprogress.org/article/how-...

SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES No. 25A264 (25-332) DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, ET AL. v. REBECCA KELLY SLAUGHTER, ET AL. ON APPLICATION FOR STAY [September 22, 2025] The application for stay presented to THE CHIEF JUSTICE and by him referred to the Court is granted. The July 17, 2025 order of the United States District Court for the Dis- trict of Columbia, No. 25βcvβ909, ECF Doc. 52, is stayed. The application is also treated as a petition for a writ of cer- tiorari before judgment, and the petition is granted. The parties are directed to brief and argue the following ques- tions: (1) Whether the statutory removal protections for members of the Federal Trade Commission violate the sep- aration of powers and, if so, whether Humphreyβs Executor v. United States, 295 U. S. 602 (1935), should be overruled. (2) Whether a federal court may prevent a personβs removal from public office, either through relief at equity or at law. The Clerk is directed to establish a briefing schedule that will allow the case to be argued in the December 2025 ar- gument session. The stay shall terminate upon the sending down of the judgment of this Court.
NEW: The Supreme Court freezes a lower court order reinstating FTC Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, whom Trump illegally fired, by a 6β3 vote. So Slaughter remains terminated.
SCOTUS also schedules arguments to decide whether to overrule Humphrey's Executor. www.documentcloud.org/documents/26...
Fifteen years after Citizens United opened the floodgates of corporate and dark political money, the Center for American Progress has figured out how to slam them back shut.
CAP published its groundbreaking how-to report today: "The Corporate Power Reset That Makes Citizens United Irrelevant."
Donβt get me wrong, I adore the DC metro, but I do find their policy of requiring at least one escalator to be out of order at all times somewhat confusing
The Supreme Court is now insisting that even its unexplained (and thinly explained) grants of emergency relief to the Trump administration are precedents lower courts have to follow.
As todayβs βOne Firstβ explains, there are two different (but equally problematic) flaws with such an understanding:
