The Battle that Saved the BEF: Le Cateau, 26 August 1914 | Spencer Jones YouTube video by The Western Front Association

Spencer Jones ranks among my favorite lecturers on the #GreatWar. This is an absolutely masterful analysis of the II Corps defensive stand at #LeCateau in August 1914.

This is disgusting. Here’s a tech dude - never served a second of his life - talking about people killing other people. This kind of stolen tough guy talk in indicative of fascism.

β€œThe American Way of War: A History of United States Military Strategy and Policy” by Russell Weigley. I read this in college and it’s still a must-read in understanding the formative era in American military affairs.

There were so many great comic books in the 60s. My mom would give me one dollar and I could buy give comic books and have some left over for a candy bar!

Enemy Ace - Wikipedia

The artwork sort of reminds me of the DC comic book β€œEnemy Ace” that I used to read as a boy in the 60s.

This seems like an article or letter that this guy is writing to Army magazine. Did you click on his bio? He’s an AGR. What do you bet he’s a fitness bro w/one deployment downrange?

I know that quite a few Army barracks are infested with toxic mold and full of asbestos. Maybe some of those are available?

I follow some pretty esoteric alleyways in studying the #GreatWar. Atm, I’m reading β€œThe Heart and Soul of an Army” (1921) by Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston. This excerpt on page 271 speaks to the fallacy that supporting arms (including airpower) win wars. It’s worth repeating today. #booksky #milsky

This is such a poignant story. Tom Isitt demonstrates how war touches every one of its participants with the fire. No who encounters war one is immune.

Possibly the best WW1 tank design (ignoring the vile cupola) was the French FCM 1A Heavy Tank with its 105 mm gun and multiple machine guns. Too late for the war it was surpassed by different ideas. Images c.1917/1918 1/4 #Tank #WW1

Black and white photo of a military band standing in a circle playing the bagpipe and drums.

It's #InternationalBagpipeDay! To celebrate here are the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in Salonika (c.1916) during #WW1.

The photo is part of an album which belonged to Annie Allen, a nurse with the Scottish Women's Hospitals. Her unit was stationed in Salonika in 1916. #histnursing

β€œCanadians Repairing a Track Under Shellfire” by Innes Meo, 1919, #CanadianWarMuseum.

The artist served as a subaltern on the #WesternFront in the #GreatWar. He left us this piece showing the routine labour of the trenches in combat. Of course, there was nothing routine about it. #fwwhist #CEF #BEF

He was such a talented artist. I hesitate to use words like β€œfavourite” when discussing war art. But Mears had this way about his work of finding the dirty, gritty side of the war experience.

Early this week we experienced an atmospheric river here in western Oregon. After everything blew through, my wife captured these beautiful images of a #rainbow from our front yard. I interpreted this rainbow as an omen of better times ahead.

It’s hard. I served for 22 years in the Army, and them for quite a long time in other agencies. I always have to remind myself that when it comes to a military affairs, it doesn’t matter an iota what I know or don’t know.

Past, Present and Future blew my mind when it came out. Every song on the album is awesome from Old Admirals right through to Nostradamus. I was just listening a few days ago. For me, it’ll always be fresh!

A couple of weeks ago, a Merkin flew into our hen house and couldn’t figure out how to get out. I wasn’t in a position to take any snaps. It was pretty exciting. The chickens all disappeared!

This little hawk lit on my bird feeder this morning in western Oregon. I’m not an expert, but I believe he’s a Cooper’s Hawk. Bertie was watching on his TV set!

I love thumbing through old copies of Punch. This amusing cartoon comes from the issue of 27/6/1917. Much of the magazine's humour is specific to that era, but this one will be recognizable to almost all professional soldiers. Enjoy...
