if you truly want to go fast, i recommend looking into something called gray codes. you can visit every valid state with a constant time update step and memory usage

i just had a list of sets, initially each point has its own set, when you link 2 points find each point's corresponding set and merge them, repeat until one set left. i guess that is a disjoint set date structure, but i thought you needed the weird tree thing for it to be fast

that's interesting, mine runs in 3.7 seconds in just python (most of the time is spent on the link enumeration). i wonder if i ended up converging on the right solution, or how you would solve it without that?
