My dad (82) grew up in Texas, so once I asked him what he learned about Juneteenth as a kid. He said the only thing he knew about it back then was that it was the day Black people were allowed in the public parks.
It’s not ancient history.
I see me in her face as she sleeps. I see my cousins. I see my children. Generations in one face, slowly slipping away.
I'm angry. I'm sad. I JUST found this family. I wanted more time.
But this is life. My father passed away before I even had the chance to look for him. Uncle, cousins gone. I mourn the loss of those I haven't met while watching one of the last ties I have to my father unravel.
I'm sitting here, watching my aunt slowly gasp her way toward the end. The same woman who just last year invited me to her home, attacked me, unceremoniously checked herself in to the hospital on my birthday, and showed every sign of cancer that doctors should have picked up last year.
Today, I don't go on fb to see all the families making effort to make some part of today special for them. I'm spending today fending off meltdowns, doing dishes from everyone's culinary experiments, and refereeing fights between my 14 and 8yos.
I would just like to take an entire piss in peace.
