We went to see Sir. David Attebborough’s ‘Ocean’, with live orchestra accompaniment @ulsterorchestra.bsky.social. A story about the massive world-wide industrial scale over-fishing with hope that we act to create #MPAs with no bottom trawling.

UK must stockpile food in readiness for climate shocks or war, expert warns
Prof Tim Lang says country produces far less food than it needs to feed population and is particularly vulnerable
Meanwhile, Irish agriculture system entirely incapable of meeting fundamental food needs of our population, with its export-based model predicated on massive fertiliser, animal feed imports.
We are shockingly vulnerable yet nobody is even talking about it.

The most recent El Niño was in 2023/2024.
2023 was the second warmest year on record. 2024 was the warmest year ever observed.
If an El Niño event were to develop later in 2026, it could result in another record breaking year, and possibly in 2027 as well, due to inertia within the climate system.

If you commit to a Safe System approach in your Road Safety Strategy then implicit in that are survivable speed limits where motors mix with people on urban/village roads. And that means 20mph except for where higher limits can be evidentially justified as safe. www.20splenty.org/guidance_2026

Fergal Keane: veteran Irish foreign correspondent leaves BBC after 37 years
Threats to a free press from oligarchs are now greater than ever, warns journalist as he departs reporting role
“We live in the age of deification of super wealth, the rise of a class of oligarchs who see the media they own as a corporate tool whose influence is to be traded for political favours. This is the great fight we must engage in" - Fergal Keane.

People riding e-scooters in a blue painted bike lane next to a couple of red buses.
TfL has published data today showing that since the launch of the e-scooter trial, "five million trips have been taken, totalling more than 10 million km - enough to travel around the world 250 times"
This is the mobility shift needed in cities to cut congestion and move people around.

A conversation earlier today reminded me of this slide I put into a recent talk. How did we decide the tiny human-sized machine is the special case, and the massive overpowered machine full of empty furniture is the norm?

Road safety agencies really don’t appreciate/understand the draught effect of air vortex destabilisation of a bike user. Forensic crash analysis will conclude that a rider simply fell off their bike with no impact from an overtaking vehicle, such as a semi-trailer rig.

Please stop using the phrase “struck by a car” when that vehicle had a driver behind the wheel. Such reportage sanitises the act of driving & enables continuing #motordom of our shared roads.
