Unless your piracy consumption comes with a means of paying creators, you are stealing their work.
If you’re also sticking it to the corporations who would otherwise pay those creators, that might make you feel cool and edgy, but at the sharp end, someone isn’t getting paid.

Piracy is a way of not paying the people who made things, and normalising consumption without payment. It’s always been theft.
It’s never been anything else.
I’m baffled how anyone can think it’s got a nobility to it.

This is the point at which the destructive brain virus got in. Sometime around the development of file sharing and piracy as a “political act”. It will eventually ruin everything. Shop well and resist.
Not only awful things have a price ticket. Lovely things do as well. Pay the nice people.

I wonder if all the bogends who reply 'Paywall' to any post from a paying site pick up a tin of soup in Tesco and shout 'NOT Free!' at the self checkout.

You only realise how badly your attention and focus is hijacked by branding every second when you are reminded that in the 70s, a sign would just say “COFFEE”, to help when you were looking for where the coffee might be.
Like the ad boards round the pitch in Billy The Fish. EAT FOOD. DRINK BEER.

Also highly recommended if you want to see the glorious unbranded almost Soviet space that was once Fleet services (Westbound) on the M3.

This is a strange and beguiling “lost” film. Saw it a few weeks ago, and I loved it. And yes, it does have the best (and most surreal) car crash ever filmed. A unique piece of British contemporary magical realism, kind of in the Stigma mould.

I think we should try and anthropomorphise human workers first.
“Imagine people… were people…”
It seems to be an issue for the technotwats.

Or to be more accurate, reporting that there are angry Wombles climbing all over the fuselage, but doing nothing about it, leading to the control tower having to down all planes, and check, painstakingly for Womble strikes.

When people talk about AI “hallucinations”, we should think of them less as charming glitches in the system, and more like an airline pilot imagining there are angry Wombles climbing all over the fuselage, panicking and crashing.
We don’t let workers have hallucinations at work. It causes problems.

When I drive to Suffolk, which I do moderately frequently, I’m always a bit “ooh” at the section of the A12 around the Orwell bridge where the A14 drags you off to East Anglia one way, but the ACTUAL Midlands the other. Cos that proves that Ipswich is definitely in the Midlands.

“Smartspeaker” is 100% what J B Priestley made up as the entertainment device for an episode of The Outer Limits in 1965, about people with bowl haircuts and glitter eyeshadow who live in a gigantic subterranean concrete torus.

I often think of the excellent film Moneyball.
But also how you wouldn’t make it without Brad Pitt on the poster.

Nobody is going to take the risk on the first one. Because if it goes wrong, they look stupid. But taking a risk on a “surefire winner” won’t lose anyone any face, even if it fucks up.

Everything is horse trading and Football Management. A star system. It’s so embedded now that it’s impossible to argue with. Qualitative judgements are much harder to stand up than insisting that magic is happening. You either accept that’s how things are framed, or go mad.

Yeah. I do it with all mine. But I have to do it manually, and process it when I do my accounts & invoicing. I spoke to some guys at Substack, and Acast; no dice. Nobody put any methods in place to pay contributors. Because the tech was designed by people who thought all content was basically free.

The only way to organise this process, sadly, is the old pitchforks and tumbrels system, and it has to be done from the ground up. It’s folk justice, I’m afraid.

Didn’t realise it’s the same guy who wants to close the Prince Charles Cinema and has made Picturehouse Central’s social spaces unusable, who is the twat who allows fold-and-restart wizard-tat-and-candy shops to fill vacant units and not pay tax.
Actively damaging quality of life should be a crime.
