Since Habitat for Humanity has completely abdicated their responsibility to use these funds to support struggling homeowners, the City should repurpose the $2 million to create an anti-displacement fund for elders and cultural community members.

Good to see the Moreno admin publicly reiterating their support and adherence to the musician pay ordinance (and a reminder that the $200/hr is the floor, not the ceiling)...the follow up to the ord should be a city fund to help pay for performances, hopefully this is the catalyst for that as well
I wrote about the most important collection of jazz history landmarks on the planet all going on the market at once. This includes the Eagle Saloon, one of Buddy Boldenβs main venues, and is a major plot twist in the saga of S. Rampart Street.
"Matthew Covey, a lawyer who specializes in immigration applications for performing artists, told attendees in a speech that he expects a 30 percent decline this year of international performers coming to the United States, compared to 2024."
All for the new mayor and new CAO cutting costs at the Mardi Gras celebration, but asking DJs to work for free ainβt it.
Theyβre not asking servers, construction folks, etc. to donate their labor.
In a city built on music, itβs a stone wrong move.
Yes we worked directly with her office to help craft the ordinance
Having Michael Hecht, who makes over half a million dollars a year, bragging about DJing for "one drink an hour" is a really bad look. The work and craft of DJ's should be valued just as any other musician or performer--they were specifically included in the musician pay ordinance just 18 months ago
New Orleans Habitat for Humanity says that while they knew the developer they sold the Musicians' Village rental properties to would raise the rent, they didn't know it would be 300% increases

The City of New Orleans has no coordinated cultural support or sustainability strategy so we continue to see resolvable situations spiral into crises where the cultural community pays the price.
As we head into a new mayoral administration and City Council, we have an opportunity to push for a new approach to cultural funding, writes @musicculture504.bsky.social

There are a lot of big ideas in the Office of Nighttime Economy's strategic plan to support nighttime businesses, but its failure to address equity of opportunity is a notable absence.

I'm in the paper today discussing why deploying the national guard to New Orleans is an unnecessary step that will hurt local businesses. I don't mention in the piece, but it will also be expensive and polling shows it's already very unpopular.
