Stock Dove | BTO The Stock Dove is an arguably underrated bird, despite being a neat and rather pretty species. Smaller than the similar-looking Woodpigeon, and lacking white in the wing, the species is often overlooked. The Stock Dove boasts a fine blue-grey sheen to its plumage. Two neat black lines on the closed wing, and dark wing edges in flight help to distinguish it from its cousin, the Woodpigeon. Stock Doves enjoy a mixture of farmland for feeding, and woodland where they nest in holes in large old trees.

(3/) In order to survey a BBS square, you will need to be able to identify the birds that are typically recorded in the square by sight, song and call. This varies considerably from square to square.

(2/) Secondly, a square that is near Cranborne. It has 29 years of data behind it and a total of 78 bird species have been recorded in it over the years. This includes Cuckoo, Turtle Dove and Barn Owl, just to name a few! There are similar vacant squares available across the UK. #Ornithology

Red-legged Partridge | BTO The Red-legged Partridge is a rather small dumpy bird with bright red legs, white cheeks and an ostentatious black spotted necklace.The species first became established as a breeding bird in the late 1700s, when large numbers were hand-reared on the Duke of Hertford's Suffolk estate.
