BURN BAN - THURSDAY, FEB. 19

A burn ban is in effect for Thursday, Feb. 19, in unincorporated areas of Douglas County due to the risk of dangerous fire weather conditions. All outdoor burning is prohibited due to the forecast of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels.

K-10 ramp closures BEGIN MONDAY for SLT work

Two K-10 ramps in Lawrence are scheduled to close for several weeks for work on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s South Lawrence Trafficway expansion project.

A 57-year-old rural Lawrence man suffered injuries Monday night west of Lawrence in a motorcycle crash.

Deputies determined the man just after 8 p.m. was headed eastbound near E 350 and N 1600 roads outside Stull when he swerved to avoid a deer.

Deputies are investigating the cause of the crash, including to determine if driver impairment was a factor.

Deputies were notified at 2:30 a.m. about the crash. According to preliminary information, the driver of a black Audi, a 21-year-old man from Olathe, crossed the center line on the highway and struck an SUV, driven by a 36-year-old Topeka woman.

Two vehicles crashed early Wednesday morning in northwestern Douglas County at E 200 Road and U.S. Highway 40. Both drivers suffered serious injuries, and medics transported each driver to a Topeka-area hospital.

The C-shift at the jail came together to surprise Sgt. Whitis with a jersey of his beloved Chicago Bears ahead of their playoff game on Sunday.

We love the camaraderie. Don’t worry because he is from Illinois. It’s not some weird thing where he picked the wrong team on purpose.

DGSO conducted joint in-service training Tuesday with Corrections and Operations personnel.

Highlights of the training included CPR/AED recertification, internal affair investigations overview, tactical bias and procedural justice and defensive tactics with shield work.
