A burn ban is in effect for Thursday, Feb. 19, in unincorporated areas of Douglas County due to the risk of dangerous fire weather conditions. All outdoor burning is prohibited due to the forecast of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels.

During the closures, the detour for both ramps will direct motorists to Sixth Street, Wakarusa Drive and Bob Billings Parkway. Drivers can follow the marked detour or use alternate routes. Message boards and signage will be in place to alert and direct motorists.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 16, the U.S. 40/Sixth Street ramp ONTO eastbound K-10 and the eastbound K-10 EXIT ramp to Bob Billings Parkway will close until late May.

K-10 ramp closures BEGIN MONDAY for SLT work

Two K-10 ramps in Lawrence are scheduled to close for several weeks for work on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s South Lawrence Trafficway expansion project.

The maneuver resulted in the crash. Medics transported him to a Topeka-area hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

A 57-year-old rural Lawrence man suffered injuries Monday night west of Lawrence in a motorcycle crash.

Deputies determined the man just after 8 p.m. was headed eastbound near E 350 and N 1600 roads outside Stull when he swerved to avoid a deer.

Deputies are investigating the cause of the crash, including to determine if driver impairment was a factor.

Deputies were notified at 2:30 a.m. about the crash. According to preliminary information, the driver of a black Audi, a 21-year-old man from Olathe, crossed the center line on the highway and struck an SUV, driven by a 36-year-old Topeka woman.

Two vehicles crashed early Wednesday morning in northwestern Douglas County at E 200 Road and U.S. Highway 40. Both drivers suffered serious injuries, and medics transported each driver to a Topeka-area hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office Underwater Search and Recovery team operates boats to respond to calls involving bodies of water.

In training this week our boat personnel were learning how to swim and float while fully clothed. Yes, those are their pants as life vests.

The C-shift at the jail came together to surprise Sgt. Whitis with a jersey of his beloved Chicago Bears ahead of their playoff game on Sunday.

We love the camaraderie. Don’t worry because he is from Illinois. It’s not some weird thing where he picked the wrong team on purpose.

DGSO conducted joint in-service training Tuesday with Corrections and Operations personnel.

Highlights of the training included CPR/AED recertification, internal affair investigations overview, tactical bias and procedural justice and defensive tactics with shield work.
