Sometimes I am tempted to call it „thanatophiliac nihilism.“ So they keep „splashing around.“ In a more recent post diagnoses a lack of „Rubicon energy.“
The „shallows of the Rubicon“ i.e. the fear of crossing it captures the state of mind of the regime perfectly. Their hesitation is an expression of the nihilistic character of their non-vision: They have no idea what they are going to do once they would reach the the other bank of the Rubicon.
On why they don‘t invoke the Insurrection Act and hesitate to escalate: The sharpest and shortest analysis comes from - of all people - Curtis Yarvin who (in Gray Mirror on Substack) describes Trump as „splashing around like a Grizzly in the shallows of the Rubicon“
