As I see it, the 2nd search is expanded to include results satisfying both 1) 'A NEAR/10 B', and 2) 'A NEAR/10 C', thereby narrowing the set of results, unless every hit on (1) also hits for (2), but in no case should the set of results meeting both (1) and (2) be greater than those meeting just (1)
I know it's been a while since I took formal logic, but a Boolean search for 'A NEAR/10 B' (word A within ten words of word B) should have more results than 'A NEAR/10 (B AND C)', right? Instead adding C increases the number of results and I am having trouble understanding why
