How does internal migration reshape the geography of agriculture in India?
See @voxdev.bsky.social article below for coverage of our recent WP (link: www.nber.org/papers/w33854)
thanks so much for highlighting my work @leightjessica.bsky.social! π
@mushfiq-econ.bsky.social
Resulting changes in land+crop prices induce nonmigrant farming hh to expand operations. This prompts a "spatial reorganization of #agriculture" where food prod'n moves from peri-urban areas to remote areas w/ lower emigration. See draft for details, model + pretty viz! (2/2)
π¨New @nber.org WPπ¨
We use data on 42,000 households in #India to study how the agricultural sector copes w/ labour loss. As #farmers move to cities for higher wages, their left-behind families *don't* substitute with increased capital -- they downsize their farms. (1/2)
thanks joel!
Happy my JMP is (finally) coming out! The JAERE review process was wonderful and improved the paper a lot. Thank you to all who helped see this project through.
Congrats Jake! I remember being excited about this at AERE years ago and then randomly zooming with you about it before we had ever met lol
So proud to have co-organized this rally, w/ inspiring + brave speeches from @tedmiguel.bsky.social, @fdoperez.bsky.social, @jenniferdoudna.bsky.social+20 more and 1000+ attendees! We need to keep fighting against the depraved stream of chaos flooding this country and damaging the rest of the world.

Summary of summary: infrastructure encroachment into forests degrades biodiversity. Yet, inclusive institutions that centre the voices of forest-dependent communities in project planning can mitigate this development-biodiversity tradeoff. Big implications for people-centred conservation policy.
Check out this VoxDev writeup of my recently accepted paper on infrastructure, institutions, and biodiversity conservation! @voxdev.bsky.social
Congrats jacob π₯³π₯³π₯³!

Do you understand how badly you have to fuck up to make Quebec sing the anthem with this much pride

Looks like this is happening.
This great perfidy from our longstanding and close ally and friend is immensely saddening and maddening.
But it also makes me resolute to defend our country. We should and must retaliate.
A thread about what I'll be looking for in our retaliation measures....
Excited to start the year off sharing some memes made by my students in Intro Econometrics for extra credit on their final. The prompt is to make a meme about an econometrics concept, and then explain to me, as if I am your less econometrically savvy relative, why the meme works.
Things students liked: 1) motivating each lecture with some theory, 2) having to write a research proposal
Things students didn't like: 1) being randomly selected to give a brief summary of the assigned reading 2) lectures had theory but assignments did not
Last semester I prepped a PhD course on environment & development econ. All material is available on my github. Hope it's helpful!
If you have suggestions (papers to cover, topics to include, etc), please let me know.
Thank you to those who provided reference material to build the course.
Congrats!!
Planning your climate or environment syllabus? I like to show short videos so students & I can visualize some of the things we're talking about. Here are some of the ones I like:
Long-overdue on 2024 recap of cool young researcher! #econtwitter #econsky My favorite part of social media + it's exciting to highlight a year's worth of exciting researchers. (Given cross-platform posting, won't link to the original π§΅s but direct to researcher sites)
Was thrilled to learn that @larsvil.bsky.social has a tutorial on reproducibility! Check it out, #EconSky.
