Everybody knows that when you painted your last mini you die. So it’s obvious to have a pile of them.

History of West-Friesland by journalist Henk Komen. Very fun to read, with a great literature list, cool maps and an aversion to nobility. Komen is also an expert on West-Frisian farm houses.

Another book on the wild West-Frisians.

Inderdaad! Goed leesbaar en leuke benaderingen. Nu nog verder onderzoek naar bebouwing en landschap in de 11e eeuw voor mij :-)

I was starting with my Hittite dba Army but they aren’t that much fun to paint as I thought.

So … I picked up on my study on the wars in the county of Holland against my ancestors, the wild West-Frisans. And bought some medieval miniatures of course. Plastic. Victrix. Glueing. :-(

This is a fun to read book on the invasion in the Batavian Republic in 1799. A combined Anglo-Russian Army bypassed the Batavian fleet who was already mutining, landed in Holland an Army, while the fleet also fought in the coastal area.

Also an Orangist Army attacked from the East but they were easily dealt with. The expected rise of the population against the Revolutionary government also did not take place. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

In the end, the French-Batavian Army won, the Allies left, Holland was plundered, lots of small battles and a mentally ill noblewoman was shot because she was suspected of anti-revolutionary activities. The Batavian fleet would be scrapped anyway so they built a new one.

In the end, the French messed up and turned the Republic into a Kingdom, and annexed the lot. They made themselves so unpopular that we now are a Kingdom under the Orange family. Go figure.

Book has nice pictures. It’s not a complete history of 1799. Well written though.

Dit is dus een erg leuk boek. Hoe de Oranjes, Britten en Russen dachten β€œeven” de Bataafse Republiek onderuit te halen en de Fransen een hak te zetten. En dat ging dus niet goed.

One of the many casualty lists of the battle of #Seneffe august 1674. Researcher Denis M. is working on another paper on it.

A lovely book in dutch with texts on the Low Countries in the 10th and 11th centuries. Lives of Saints, the evil Norsemen, an arab traveller in Utrecht and peat. Very cool!

A book mainly on Frisian Law and coinage up to the 11th century. In dutch BTW, not Frisian. Little about West-Friesland, but more on Friesland, Groningen and Ost-Friesland. But.. with some info on Medemblik, probably started as a Frankish settlement, evolving into one of the cores of later West-Friesland with it’s own coins.

Book haul of the week. I love the 11th century.
