This is probably due to squashed transients. By the way, you guys should definitely try Newfangled Audio Elevate, probably the most gatekept limiter out there.

I set the 'Tight Punch' knob to the fundamental frequency of the track's key. For instance, if my track is in G, I'll set it to 49Hz and then I'll dial the rest of the parameters from there.

I often use the free version (bx_subfilter) on my low end bus (where I route all the low-end stuff like kicks, subs, and mid basses). Absolutely killer.
