These authors reviewed 73 previous studies examining car touchscreens.

Conclusion: They're awful

"Touchscreens tended to have negative effects on driving performance, visual attention, and secondary task performance compared with voice control and physical controls."

Who are streets for? 81% of street space in Toronto is inequitably dedicated to motor vehicles. How can this be fairly re-designed?

check out our recent project mapping street space allocation in Toronto

we find that more than 80% of transportation infrastructure in Toronto is designed for cars, far more than how people actually travel

Young Canadians are hitting the brakes on car ownership, new survey finds Gen Z opting to rack up savings and use other transportation options

β€œTravelling five times a year, maxing out her TFSA, building an emergency fund, and having the freedom to see her friends when and how she wants: Those are just a few ways Deeksha Singh [of Calgary] said she can use the estimated $14,000 a year she saves by not owning a car.”

Let's talk about the cost of collisions. A fender bender isn’t minor. A crash with injuries isn’t rare. A fatal collision costs society ~$8 million. In Canada, road crashes cost ~$36 billion every year, about $99 million every day. Safer street design isn’t expensive, crashes are #VisionZero 1/2

Austerity is code for erasure: What one disabled educator, researcher and Nova Scotian thinks of the budget - Halifax Examiner If you care about disabled people, any people, your fellow Nova Scotians, then we need to talk seriously about collective action. About coordinated labour disruption. About a general strike.

β€œThis budget will disable all of us. Austerity always does. It erodes public systems until precarity becomes the norm. The only people insulated are those with private buffers and political friendships.”

Language matters. @hfxgov.bsky.social has a plan of 'towards zero' deaths on our roads. But behind every statistic is a person, so who lives & who dies in that scenario? Who would you be willing to sacrifice? #RoadSafety #VisionZero youtu.be/GAZ7sI-LDvo?...

I want to stop killing people on our streets, but not right away because that would be too costly and it might upset drivers

Several previously passed road safety motions are recommended to be postponed or scaled back at the March 10th Vancouver Council mtg, "with the objective of freeing up staff capacity in order to better implement Council’s priorities"

This is what happens when you starve the city budget.

but it also shows how low a priority not killing people is to them.
Compare this with "paving gravel roads" with is getting $20M no questions asked

HRM will hire a project manager dedicated to road safety with this funding. Before road safety was just something PW fit in between working on road projects. So while this year won’t be a huge change, some RRFBs, some intersection design, it does set things up for more in future years.

Drivers complaining about having to pay for public and active transport is like ordering all the most expensive items on the menu, refusing to share it, splitting the bill and then complaining about having to pay for everyone else's meal of one serving of breadsticks.
