A sliver of hope with US officials announcing a meeting this week with China on tariffs.
One thing is for sure even if there is progress. Xi is never going to agree to sit in the Oval Office next to Trump and risk being contradicted the way Carney was today.
News just now: Treasury and USTR simultaneously announce that Sec. Bessent and Amb. Greer will both travel to Switzerland this week to meet with Chinese officials to talk trade.
Comes after Bessent said today trade talks with China had not yet begun.

Carney: Iβm glad that you couldnβt tell what was going through my mind
Reporter: Oh I could
Trump: "I could announce 50 to 100 deals right now because I'm the shopkeeper and I keep the store. I know what countries are looking for and I know what we're looking for and I can just set those terms and they can go shopping or they don't have to go shopping, because everybody wants to shop here"

key point from @pkrugman.bsky.social: it's literally impossible for foreign governments to negotiate with Trump because he and his people can't/won't even articulate a consistent set of demands paulkrugman.substack.com/p/trump-is-t...
Equally, trying to parse what the President is saying is pretty close to impossible. There are many interpretations:
1. He's not making deals, but rather dictating tariff rates
2. He's looking to make deals, but if you don't like his terms you can walk away
3. He still hasn't figured any of this out
In a long monologue in the Oval Office beside Canadian PM Mark Carney this afternoon, the President appears to say the trade "deals" his team are working on are not deals in the traditional sense, as they will not have to be signed.
This is really significant! More in thread.

Trump barely won and many of his proposals barely crack the 50% mark in support, which even then is because of staunch Republican support. But thereβs a reason he and his team insist they have a sweeping mandate. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Improvement at the IRS is a major accomplishment of the Biden administration. It is answering taxpayer helplines. Audits of the super-wealthy are up.
And now the IRS is set to lose $20B because a of quirk in a budget law, potentially unraveling a lot of that work.
