The older I get, the more my politics mature from childish, naïve beliefs like "the world is complicated and leaders have to make hard decisions" to more serious, adult principles like "hurting people is bad and helping people is good."

To understand this problem, first, you have to understand the demographics of Star Trek viewers. Trekkies are and always have been men. Women are not usually interested in science fiction, but that’s doubly true of Star Trek in particular. I hear you, random guy who once knew some lady who watched every Voyager episode. I see you on Instagram, attractive girl cosplaying in Starfleet miniskirts. Unfortunately, you very cool Trek-girls are the exception, not the rule.
okay grandpa, let's get you to bed

To be totally clear about what's happening here: the language model is doing next-token prediction on a document whose first several thousand words establish everything that follows as a conversation between a human and a highly advanced artificial mind — a type of mind that doesn't really exist, but that the model is designed to roleplay. When a person uses Claude or ChatGPT, they're meant to believe they're interacting with a helpful Al assistant. What they're actually doing is collaborating with a language model on writing a work of science fiction about a human talking to an AI.

I'd like people to stop using the term alignment (as in aligning AI with human values). it's just vacuous. human value is infinite & culture, history, ideology & context dependent & not something you can entirely quantify & automate either
My experience in experimenting with LLM coding so far:
Me: Write code that frobnicates
LLM: Sure here is non-functioningXYZ.code!
Me: That doesn’t work because of XYZ
LLM: Sorry here’s non-functioningABC.code!
Me: Now that’s broken because of ABC
LLM: My bad here is non-functioningXYZ.code!
That’s one poorly aged tweet huh

Every time I click a news article only to be hit by a paywall I think about how every conspiracy website is absolutely free to read.
That awful moment when you fix something fundamental and years of ugly workarounds are laid bare, squinting back at you in the headlights.
Yes, and also, some things are NOT complicated, morally, ethically or legally, but the contexts in which they exist are so massively clusterfucked that any statement of that not complicated value can be challenged by both sincere and insincere alike, for different reasons, but with the same result.

What I miss about covid lockdown times is the fantasy that some aspects of society would come from it changed for the better, or that we would learn anything at all.

Two men look at a picture. One says "I'm glad we're on the top layer of this this infinite recursion." The other says "yeah, that means we're the original versions of the guys in the picture." The picture they're looking at contains an image of them saying the above phrases and looking into a picture depicting them saying the above phrases on into infinity.
That’s one sick burn if I’ve ever heard one!
