Anyways happy Harry Styles New Album Eve to all who celebrate!
Today is one of these days, but nonetheless the words are (slowly) flowing, so it's okay...
Do you ever write and feel like every word costs you a literal piece of your brain.... like you can feel it physically coming out of your head?
That's perfect, thank you!
@book-historia.bsky.social hi Allie, do you have the title or link of that Rebecca Romney article you mentioned on your talk at NLA? About "made collectibles". (Assuming that I'm thinking about the same Rebecca you mentioned π ). I couldn't find it! Thank you!
Samba school being evaluated
One of the best things about the carnival parade is that the samba schools are evaluated? graded? by juries during the parade and on Ash Wednesday we all sit for 2 hours while these grades(?) are announced and someome fills up an animated excel sheet on live television. Higher one wins.
Found a video! www.instagram.com/reel/DU5IAdU...
A video (Instagram): www.instagram.com/reel/DU5IAdU..., worth the watch!
I'll try to find a video for you to watch and better photos, it was really interesting! And your talk was incredible btw!
Sketch made by Rosa MagalhΓ£es for Imperatriz samba school.
Fun fact: all of Rosa's carnival design sketches (example below), more than 5k of them, were donated by her to the Rio de Janeiro State University's (UERJ) library in 2022: www.sirius.uerj.br/portais/acer...
Every samba school has someone that's the creative person behind every parade, like an artistic director. We call them a 'carvalesco(a)'. Salgueiro, on the photos, is paying tribute to the life and work of Rosa MagalhΓ£es, one of the biggest 'carnavalescas' we've had.
This is the Salgueiro samba school btw!

Watching the Carnival parade in Rio on my TV and the first part made md think about Allie's (@book-historia.bsky.social) talk in Australia a few days ago, about Pop Bibliography. I'll try to find better photos later (because it's 4am now lol):
halftime show
what a shot
Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the TaΓnos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous
Incredible perfomance by Benito!
And I also made the time to watch All Her Fault (it's finally in Brazil) and it's AMAZING! JAW DROPPING. Fantastic doesn't even describe it right. Go watch it if you haven't already!
Also, yeah, I have watched Heated Rivalry over my (unfortunately very short) break and I DO highly recommend it. Can't wait for season 2! Been focusing on PhD readings now but I can't wait to read the books π€ΈββοΈπ
Fantastic title
What if we let people wear clothes, makeup, jewelry that made them happy and we shut the fuck up about age, body, gender and every other thing because it's none of our business and JUST LET PEOPLE ENJOY THEMSELVES.

Late but wishing everyone a really Happy New Year despite anything and everything else. Take care of yourself and yours. Take breaks. Make stuff with your hands. Touch grass as much as possible. Watch a TV show just for the fun of it. Listen to good music. Have good drinks. Let's stay whimsical.
I totally understand you because I've been wanting to go to the national conference I presented at last month for ages but making the trip is somehow always crazy expensive, I was glad it was in my city this year π I'll let you know if I end up going! π₯°

NEVER CHANGE, ETHAN HAWKE
Hi friends! Does anyone know someone working at the V&A Research Institute (VARI) or the V&A Museum itself who could answer a question about doing research with them as a visiting student?
I've emailed a few times in the past months, but I fear it might've gotten lost somewhere π
