It's time for another blog post! This time, I explain why I use specifications grading, and why I think points are bad--at least if we accumulate them.

I was able to do some sightseeing after SIGCSE TS. #TS2026 #stlouisarch
Snacks have been great during breaks. We also had frozen custard, gooey cake, and chips today. #TS2026

On January 1, 2022, I posted that I had walked every day that year. It is now February 8, 2026 and I still can say I have walked every day for at least 20 minutes since January 1, 2022. That is a total of 1500 days. During that time I have walked more than 9300 miles. #goals #walking #habits
Beginning programmer's reflection: "At first I tried really hard to write the code so that it would work perfectly the first time I ran it. Once I gave up that mindset and allowed myself to make mistakes it became a lot easier to find where the problems in my code were."

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
A-telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

My POV tonight. #chirpchirp
All set up and ready for students to come play slow games of tic-tac-toe. Each time a student visits my office they get to make two moves. And then I wait for the next student to arrive.

Whelp! I've done it again. I've walked every day this year! That makes five January 1s in a row that I've done that. Four years and a day done (3 miles); just 364 days and 2023 miles to go this year.
#goals
During the last 10 years, I've walked 22,871 miles. I'm looking forward to what 2026 has to offer. If I walk 4 more miles than needed to match next year's number, I will have walked the circumference of the Earth (at the equator) in eleven years.
I walked at least 20 minutes EVERY day of 2025. Since January 1, 2022, that makes 1461 consecutive days (4 years). I walked 2,244 miles this year, surpassing my goal of walking the year number by 219 miles. I recorded 3,470,553 steps in 2025, which translated to an average of 6.1 miles per day.

I decided to wait until after dinner for my walk when the windchill temperature got up to its high of 2°F. It wasn’t bad except exposed skin got a little chilly.

I got to wear my @bsuimmersive.bsky.social High Impact Practices Faculty pin to @ballstate.bsky.social graduation for the first time today.
I’m ready for another fun filled morning of herding cats.
Sometimes you need to bring your debugging duck with you to get through your Computer Science final exam.
It’s the end of day one of finals and things are already starting to look blurry! Oh wait, maybe that’s not a mirror.
We have great professors in our department, and now we have proof that @ballstate.bsky.social thinks too. Not only is our department chair, Jen Coy, a great professor, earlier this semester she was presented with the Outstanding Administrator Award. Read more... www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
