Re-reading βNever say anything a kid can say,β gold from the early 2000s. A fave quote: lecture is βthe transfer of info from the notes of the lecturer to the notes of the student without passing through the minds of either.β hybridalgebra.pbworks.com/f/Never+Say+...
Have you read the Expanse series? Highly recommend.
This afternoon I testified on SF 1740, the Senate Educational Policy Omnibus bill. I want to ensure all MN students have equitable access to opportunities afforded to them through a grounding in mathematics. Check it out below, my testimony starts at 1:37:50. www.senate.mn/schedule/liv...
Congrats!
At a marzano conference. First resonating quote: βPeople forget what they know, they donβt forget what they understand.β #edusky
2) This does bring the need for a conversation on what is important to learn. Ex: I know basics of coding, but can't write from scratch to save my life. AI helped produce Google Scripts that save a ton of productivity time importing and saving data. Do I really need to know coding from scratch?
"However, we additionally find that when access [to Generative AI] is subsequently taken away, students actually perform worse than those who never had access" 1) Turns out shortcutting the learning process doesn't work, weird. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
I rate October 11 much higher.

Everywhere I go, I ask teachers, "What do you wish society understood about your job?" If you'd like to chime in, I would LOVE to hear your thoughts via this form, DM, or email: forms.gle/xh8YkyKYWVyv...
"I see so many parallels between choosing curriculum 20 years ago and choosing edtech tools now; lots of hype, flashy claims, and no watchdog."
The endnote about the expectation that teachers take garbage resources and turn them into something useful is a sad insight into what's out there.

Haha weβll see
Itβs a good thing I didnβt have to because someone has to stick to their principles.
Fixed! First post on this site shrug
Published a second ago so I'm hoping it's just a lag?
I completely agree. The focus on grades over meaningful learning has worsened with online gradingβs transparency. Despite years of adding tech for teachers and students, thereβs little real evolution in how itβs integrated to improve education. #sschat #bfc530 #edusky
This whole thread is worth sifting through, particularly as we wrestle as a math community as to what is relevant for *all* learners in compulsory education. Happy that the #mnmath community is hitting this head on with new standards including data science! #mtbos #edusky
Another reason to steer clear of 'learning styles.' "In sum, we show that providing information about learning styles leads to (unwarranted) inferences about childrenβs intelligence and aptitude." #edusky www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Investing in school infrastructure tangibly & positively affects both students and community. "estimates suggest that closing the spending gap between high- and low-SES districts...may close as much as 25% of the observed achievement gap between these districts. #edusky www.nber.org/papers/w3204...
9 years ago this week I wrote about my favorite activity for the day before winter break. It's one of the top posts on my blog. If you need a guareenteed win this week - check out the 5x5 game. All students engage in this. Gr 3-12. Easy. Low prep. Smiles. www.saravanderwerf.com/5x5-most-ama...
*AND* please, please, please...
Make sure they are not Christmas centric.
Yes, many students may enjoy holiday themed "fun activities" but unless you're at a religious school, you're bound to have at least one student who will feel alienated and likely won't be comfortable speaking up.
Fun with math practices today!
