The heat energy we added to the ocean LAST YEAR is the equivalent of:
- Detonating ten hydrogen bombs every minute
- operating over a hundred large power plants continuously for all of written human history
- Five times all the electricity human beings have ever used
ICYMI: I talked with Hawaii's Senator Brian @schatz.bsky.social about (among other things) current Republican efforts at permitting reform and why he is not on board, despite being pro-permitting reform in general.
In short, you're not creating a "level playing field" if Trump & Burgum are, through other means, effectively imposing a ban on solar power. Unless they stop doing that, any permitting reform is simply a blank check to fossil fuels.
The deep connection between oil and war has been a defining factor of modern geopolitics, but usually US Presidents try to downplay the link.
Not Trump. There he is on TV telling us the US has the biggest oil companies in the world and they are going to take control of Venezuela's oil. #ClimateSky
Is it a threat to free speech when the President of the United States threatens to yank the broadcast license of a channel whose reporters are asking him challenging questions?
I ask because I feel like there used to be tons of pundits worried about free speech. Where'd they go?
There was an NYT piece last week about the Sierra Club, and (by extension) the current state of the climate movement.
I think they got three big things wrong.

Qiyam Ansari tenderly holds an inhaler attached to a face mask to the face of a fluffy black cat.
Qiyam Ansari has asthma β an attack nearly killed him β and even his cat suffers from it. Their region is notorious for its air pollution.
Trump has halted rules that would have forced companies to more accurately measure and reduce emissions in such areas.

Vought is at war with large swaths of the population, with the very idea of a society defined by democratic pluralism. If you have correctly identified that this guy is now in a really powerful position, that people like him are in control of the government, how is that not the main story?
Vought is not interested in βnormalβ democratic politics: He seeks to βtraumatizeβ civil servants, use the military to suppress protests, and sees Trump as an agent of Godβs will. He is convinced to be fighting a noble war to defend his βreal Americaβ of white Christian patriarchal rule.

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream mediaβs infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.
