The Eric Schickler essay in Larry Bartel's symposium on "What Trump Has Taught Us About Political Science" is one of the most insightful pieces I've read in 2025.

US institutions turned out to be weak, and we have to rethink conventional wisdom.

They’re also *not wrong* we have a political economy where young people have very little space to be less than perfect. The job market is collapsing for them - I’ve recently found myself being a sympathetic ear for freaked undergrads who are not my students bc I do small talk when I travel.

Having had to talk down multiple freshman from a ledge when they made the first B of their life on the first assignment in my classes when teaching at an elite liberal arts school, a lot of these young adults have been socialized that anything less than an A+ is failure.

Costumed protesters in Portland defy description of the city as a 'war zone' Dancing frogs, peacocks and unicorns outside the federal immigration building present a joyful contrast to the Trump administration's portrait of the Oregon city, they say.

β€œThe absurdity of adults dancing in inflatable costumes during anti-ICE demonstrations is meant to display community joy, protesters say, and helps to dispel the Trump administration’s narrative that Portland is a crime-ridden β€œwar zone,” a characterization local and state leaders say is false.”

Do men see gender parity in representation as detrimental to their interests? What about when women’s representation exceeds parity? And how do such shifts affect men’s fairness perceptions? I address these questions in my article, now published in PRQ. 1/9

Aging Libraries Could Offer Cities a Unique Opportunity to Build New Housing While Improving Public Services Since 2000, more than 1,800 apartment units have been built in combined library-housing developments. These projects not only address local housing needs but…

Cities are developing a new approach to developing housing: Integrating it into mixed-use library projects. These investments improve neighborhood vitality, add housing & improve services.

In new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, I create a database of such projects & point to success stories ⏬

We're getting a wave of articles that are like, "gee willikers it sure seems like the people who complained about 'cancel culture' for years really like canceling people."

Yes! This was extremely obvious at the time and a lot of us pointed it out!

We’ve never had a shutdown under a competitive authoritarian regime before. This matters because the rules of the game have changed. If congressional leaders act as if the old rules apply, they will lose. The executive seeks to consolidate power and does not negotiate in good faith.

The issue with gifted classes isn't the content, its that testing INTO gifted classes is a structure based in racism and classism.

Many students who would benefit from these classes never get the chance, that's why Mamdani wants to shift away from this program.

Trump’s CDC cuts could threaten chronic illness and national security, experts warn Public health leaders worry proposed 53% CDC slash would weaken disease prevention and pose a national security risk

Fully 80% of the CDC's budget goes out to state and local health departments. Slashing the CDC's budget is going to be felt by "every person in every community across this country, whether they realize it or not.” my latest: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.

To be honest I don't think the solutions to AI in education are hard to imagine they are just hard to fund.

You need more in class time and smaller classes where faculty can engage more with students in the process of learning. This all costs money though as you have to grow more faculty.

Today is my birthday. 35 years ago my mom had more access to abortion than women do today in the state of Texas.

Iβ€˜m so mad.

Wendy Davis did not bust her ass on the floor of the TX statehouse for appeasing pundit dudes to just throw away the legacy of Dems fighting for women in red states.

You know what would be a better strategy than running pro-life Dems in red states where pro-choice referendums passed.

Figuring out who is voting republican & for pro-choice referendums to figure out how we can win them to the Dems.

But no it’s easier to just give up on women’s autonomy πŸ™ƒ.
