Photo of a cuneiform tablet fragment shaped a bit like an irregular diamond. It preserves nearly 20 incomplete lines of text separated by a horizontal ruling
There's a broken cuneiform tablet from the Old Babylonian period, nearly 4,000 years ago, which preserves a tiny portion of a dialogue between two friends.
It feels a bit like the conversations I've been having for the past week, so I wanted to share it.

Does anyone have a favourite book on the history of nuclear weapons? I'm particularly interested in how the physicists grappled with the ethics of what they were unleashing on the world. I fear computer scientists might be the next to have such a reckoning.

Yiyun Li | To Remember in America
When I was at nursery school in Beijing in the 1970s, there was a teacher who seemed to find tireless pleasure in...
‘If bad things happen, you are the problem; do not provoke; keep up the hope; things will be better – by the midterms, in four years, some day.’
Yiyun Li on enduring America, from the blog.

Ukrainians are dying, getting tortured, witnessing their culture, language and entire cities being erased by russians or mislabeled as "russian".
I'm sure y'all can survive not whitewashing of russians or posing them as victims in TV shows.
It's not even "too soon", we're still alive here

This just arrived, written in 1956 and just translated. With it came these lines, pertinent to the age of AI (attributed to "To the Cogs," Molussian Industrial Hymns):
Each day out of machines arise
ever more beautiful machines.
Only we remain malformed,
only we're born obsolete.

New: Read the translated KGB training manual on how the Soviets categorized white Westerners they looked to recruit, according to four basic personality types. Some unintentionally hilarious stuff in here, all analyzed by Mike Miller, a recent retiree from the CIA and a cognitive psychologist.

100 Years of Microsoft Stories
YouTube video by Microsoft Developer
At the Microsoft MVP summit, @kclemson.bsky.social, Raymond Chen and I did a talk consisting of stories from the past 40 or so years of Microsoft history.
Unfortunately ir wasn't recorded.
This fall, we recreated it on video to be shared, and I'm so happy we did.
