This weekend, Saturday May 17th and Sunday May 18th we will be at the 162nd Annual Victoria Highland Games, at Topaz Park in Victoria BC. Our commissioner, Randy Stewart invites anyone in the area to stop by the Stewart Society tent.

His claim to the throne of England was through his great grandmother, Margaret Tudor ( Henry VIII's sister) who married James IV.

Portrait of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. The vain and self obsessed cousin and husband of Mary Queen of Scots who was brought up to expect that he would be king.
#otd 10 February 1567, Kirk o’ Field house in Edinburgh was destroyed by an explosion. The partially clothed bodies of Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, and his servant, William Taylor were found in a nearby orchard, apparently strangled but unharmed by the explosion.

#OTD 8 February 1587, Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle; a scaffold had been erected in the Great Hall, with witnesses including George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury who had been her custodian for 16 years (1569-1585).

On 8 February 1746, during the Jacobite '45, 5000 seasick Hessian troops disembarked at Leith. They were commanded by Prince Friedrick of Hesse-Kassel, the son-in-law of Britain's King George II, and had been summoned to replace Dutch and Swiss auxiliaries that had been recalled.
