Let's keep it up folks...
Degoogling is my small way of fighting back against these corrupt bedfellows. To start your own journey, I invite you to check out my site at www.degoogle-your-life.com/en
It's a work in progress - like my own #degoogle journey. But even small steps send a signal that these companies won't ignore.
#bigtech had lined up to kiss the ring at the #trump inauguration a few weeks earlier. It was silent in the aftermath. Later, they forked over millions in "donations" to help him build his ballroom.
"You don't have any cards!"
"Why don't you wear a suit?"
"Have you said thank you once?"
It was grotesque. It was humiliating. It was wrong.
Before deleting it, I posted on #facebook:
"Dec. 7, 1942 - Feb. 28, 2025: The Age of America"
I still feel that way today.
A week from now will mark the one-year anniversary of my #degoogle journey. Do you remember that day? It was the day the US, my country of origin, did its best to humiliate the leader of a country under assault.
Enjoyed listening to the discussion between @hankgreen.bsky.social and @kyla.bsky.social. Lots of good thoughts on the corrupt dynamics between #bigtech and #trump. Definitely worth a listen (yes it's a YouTube link): www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOR4...
The degoogle train keeps rolling - hop aboard!
In terms of pros:
- I've been happy with the service, personally
- Migration was a cinch
- Suite is extensive and constantly improving
- It just works - no outages or bugs in my experience
- It's not Google <-------- π₯³
Other notable pros/cons:
- You need at least the lowest paid version to use Proton in tandem with Thunderbird or other 3rd party clients.
- They lay the marketing on a little thick for my tastes
- If you use many custom domains, I think they limit you to three
If you are a heavy search user - particularly for body text search - Proton cannot compare to Gmail. For subject line and sender/recipient searches, it does just fine. But anything beyond that requires you to download your messages into the browser cache or app.
βYour email is encryptedβ β but what does that *actually* mean?
I wrote a clear, non-technical guide that explains the basics and highlights whatβs often hidden in the fine print.

Hey guys and gals,
I've been using Proton for nearly a year now and have a referral link. New users get 20 USD off (and I get 20 USD as well).
Here is the link: pr.tn/ref/30VDKTVQ
If you have any questions, ask away. Also feel free to share this link if you know someone who would benefit.
A side-benefit of degoogling? You de-Epstein as well!

2025 is history. 1984 is here!
There's never been a better time to degoogle your life!
In January, I'll be releasing content on switching email providers. Stay tuned...

How is zero-access encryption not the global standard? It's been almost 13 years since Edward Snowden's bombshell revelations.
Oh, probably because people like me were asleep at the wheel for most of that time, thinking: I have nothing to hide.
Well, times they be a changin'...

Yeah, I went with Waterfox as I like to have the sync function across devices and LibreWolf doesn't have an Android browser. Otherwise they are pretty similar. Brave is also one of my favorite alternatives...
Privacy matters because information is power, facts can be twisted and context can be reframed. You may have nothing to hide (in terms of criminal activity), but criminals can use your data to steal, kill and destroy. You wouldn't give your PIN to anyone that asks - for good reason: Privacy matters.
For those put off by the recent AI pivot by Firefox, may I recommend you try Waterfox? I've been using it for months as my main browser across devices and have been very happy with it.
Check it out at www.waterfox.net

Depends on what you mean by "degoogle". A full degoogle takes some work, but you can get off to a very good start if you follow the guides on my website at www.degoogle-your-life.com
It will help you get your browser and device settings much more degoogled than they likely were before.
I wouldn't necessarily write it off completely just yet, but he certainly didn't make a great first impression.
I use waterfox, a branch off of the firefox tree. If you are using firefox, it should feel very familiar. That would be my top recommendation.

Also a Proton user here. I like it. Switching was dead easy. But if you want to go another route, Tuta, Posteo and Mailfence are solid options.
As the other commenter said - it is a process. Getting the mails switched over is easy - what takes time is changing your address on various sites/apps.
Fair, free competition with a healthy legal system should not lead to these kind of one-sided results. Something is broken...

Degoogle fact 7:
85% of PCs run on operating systems controlled by just two US companies (Microsoft & Apple). 99% of smartphones run on some form of Android or iOS (Google & Apple). To quote one of those companies: "Think different"

That may play a role in their decision-making. On the whole, it is about risk management - minimizing the amount of leverage that one country, company or actor can use against you. You can't eliminate it, but you can spread it out.
