Kansas just passed a monstrous bill enabling criminal penalties and vigilante lawsuits for trans people using the bathroom according to their gender identity and requires them to surrender their current drivers licenses and birth certificates if it does not match their sex assigned at birth.
My point is that people rightfully have no faith in the current US congress to enforce the law, which is why I said it’s great when threads like Jamelle’s include details on why the organization of elections doesn’t depend on congress to happen. Just calling people doomers is less helpful
Yes but that’s exactly the issue, congress is acting as if they ARE subservient to Trump. The president “can’t” order military strikes without approval, but he did. He “can’t” withhold congressionally approved funds, but he did. Legally possible and practically possible are different things
I think one of the main sources of confusion is that the word “can’t” can mean “it’s not legal” or can mean “it is, in practice, not within his power”. The first usage is no longer very convincing regarding Trump, so it’s important to emphasize that falls under the second case
I appreciate this kind of thread because I’m often not sufficiently well informed to know what mechanisms exist that Trump could try to exploit - I only know that he’s shitty enough to try anything, and that many of our checks and balances have failed. So this is very helpful discussion, thank you

Agreed. I think this adaptation misses the tone on almost everything, with Donald Sutherland being the notable exception. This scene is easily the highlight of the film and is the one moment I thought was done more effectively than in the BBC miniseries.

This is infuriating. Maybe the TA could have given some pity points but fundamentally the essay didn’t address the reading, so a grade of zero is appropriate. And that’s before you get into the “demonic” BS. Yet another trans person thrown under the bus because it’s easier than having a spine
But most of them didn’t seem like grammatical errors? The highlighted quotation marks are all swapped but I assumed the rest of the highlights were comments on style. The essay has plenty of problems but the grammar is mostly fine
