Anyway, stream of consciousness rant for this Saturday morning complete.

TLDR: Claude ain’t conscious. AI for military use bad. Don’t support AI β€œart” or writing.

Ok, serious nuanced take.

No, Claude isn’t conscious, nor is any other LLM.

I have a better understanding than average of how these systems work. The company I work for can do deep observability of just about any software, including AI models. I can see how they β€œtalk”.

They aren’t sentient.

We don’t talk enough about how morally depraved the tech industry turned out to be. Every single ounce of their self-regarding statements of values was an outright lie.

Glioblastoma zebrafish Avatars guide therapeutic decisions in a patient with gliosarcoma: a case report - Communications Medicine Fontes et al. report a case study of a person with recurrent glioblastoma for whom patient-derived zebrafish xenografts (zAvatars) were used to test 13 off-label therapies with radiotherapy. zAvatars identified pemetrexed and doxorubicin as effective, guiding treatment that stabilized the patient.

🚨 NEW RESEARCH! βš•οΈ 🩺

Fontes et al. share a case report of a glioblastoma patient's sample use in generating patient-derived zebrafish xenografts (zAvatars) and subsequent testing of therapeutic options.

Please check out our new preprint! Using single cell analysis paired with HCR to visualize transcript localization we have identified cell and tissue-specific expression of various genes encoding tubulins, kifs, and dyneins during neural crest development!

Humanity heating planet faster than ever before, study finds Researchers identify sharp rise to about 0.35C every decade, after excluding natural fluctuations such as El NiΓ±o

Climate breakdown is occurring more rapidly with the heating rate almost doubling, according to research that excludes the effect of natural factors behind the latest scorching temperatures.

Pulling a point I made in some replies onto main: I think one big shift in how the public is reacting to people who don't vaccinate their kids is that as recently as, say, 2023, you could look at your anti-vax neighbors as annoying flakes and a theoretical risk - but far lower case numbers meant...

A different betting-on-murder app, Kalshi, just partnered (read: gave money to) with the Associated Press, which absolutely should know better than to give their golden goose (industry-standard election results) to a gambling site, but apparently they are run by fucking morons now.

Polymarket is trying VERY HARD to wheedle their way into a more socially acceptable space, where instead of being FanDuel for bombings, they are thought of as An Important Dataset. They just partnered (read: gave money to) Substack for this reason. Do not accept the premise. It is bullshit.

This has nothing to do with the specific content here, but Polymarket adopting the language of news, here with BREAKING, and with Texas election results earlier this week, is BAD. Polymarket is not and will never be a news org or break news. It's a betting app. It's Draft Kings for sociopaths.

My ICQ UIN is 7231680. That number is burned into my consciousness. I inadvertently learned that you could see private conversations in public chat rooms when using Telnet instead of a browser on GeoCities. I can tell you the difference in audible dial-up handshakes between 1200, 2400, 14.4 kbps modems. I needed a edu email address to join Facebook after my university was admitted. We were here at the beginning. We made social media. You wouldn't be in my Top 8. I have usernames older than you.

Dear SDB Members,

I am writing to clarify how to fully comply with the 2024 NIH Public Access Policy without paying the current $3,910 Article Processing Fee for Open Access for your paper accepted in Developmental Biology.

Attached is a diagram showing the process.

Once you receive the letter of acceptance for your paper in Developmental Biology, upload the accepted and unformatted version of your manuscript to the NIH Manuscript Submission system, NIHMS (nihms.nih.gov).

Select β€œ0 months” for the embargo.

Once approved, you will receive a PCMID number for your manuscript. Your manuscript will then be publicly accessible, satisfying the NIH Public Access Policy requirement.

If you choose the β€œOpen Access” option, you will pay the $3,910 Article Processing Fee. If you choose the β€œSubscription” option, you do not pay any fee. Developmental Biology has traditionally not charged authors for any fees as it was subsidized by institutional subscriptions. Royalties from Developmental Biology's institutional subscriptions also support SDB’s programs. SDB encourages you to ask your library to subscribe to Developmental Biology. Save your funds and support the SDB, while also fully complying with the NIH Public Access Policy!

Yours truly,

Richard Behringer, PhD

I'm in the US, but we have fibroblast lines we used for the 2 TU assemblies and the AB assembly. The TU lines have some chromosomal number instabilities, we haven't checked the AB one but the advantage of all 3 lines is their genomes are sequenced...

Chotiner's genius isn't necessarily in extracting incredibly incriminating statements from the guilty, it's in making sure 1 of every 5 interviews is completely laudatory towards a deserving subject, which is enough to convince the other 4 of 5 interviewees that they're getting a glow-up.

Why can’t people (especially scientists) see that AI generated figures and diagrams shout out that they were AI generated and look awful? You’ve spend many months designing and performing experiments only to cover the resulting masterpiece in clear plastic like a cheap sofa.
