If we didn’t love our country and harbor hope for its highest ideals, days like today wouldn’t hurt so bad.

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company.

It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create.

They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms.

I’m happy to invest and/or help

5 ways to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth (cause the fed govt doesn’t run your house)

1. Find out what Sojourner Truth REALLY said
2. Buy a Black horror, scifi or fantasy book
3. Listen to β€œNaima” by John Coltrane
4. Send the victims of the LA fires in Altadena a few coins
5. Get a library card

We focus a lot on how tough the summers can be for facilities without AC… but prisons and jails aren’t exactly replete with blankets and other ways to stay warm. Cold spells like this can be tough to navigate, especially in states that aren’t used to them.

Prison abuse, deaths and escapes prompt calls for more oversight β€’ Alabama Reflector As state legislatures convene in the coming weeks, many lawmakers are focusing on a key criminal justice issue for prisons and jails: more oversight.

"Correctional oversight will take center stage in this year’s legislative sessions, driven by mounting scrutiny of worsening prison and jail conditions and the growing adoption of independent oversight bodies across the country."

Great piece with insightful commentary by @micheledeitch.bsky.social

β€˜This is my way out.’ In Maine, remote work gives prisoners a lifeline. - The Boston Globe Remote work has spread far and wide since the pandemic spurred a work-from-home revolution of sorts, but perhaps no place more unexpectedly than behind prison walls.

It’s great that these incarcerated workers earn market wages. It’s horrible that news stories like this one treat β€œpay-to-stay” fees as normal, if not desirable.

β€œLike inmates in work-release programs … 10 percent of remote workers’ wages go to the state to offset the cost of room and board.”

Figure showing number of school shootings per year since 2008

Just 2 days after the 12th anniversary of Sandy Hook, the US has its 83rd school shooting of the year, surpassing last year's record for the most school shootings.

This breaks my heart. And my heart will keep on breaking b/c the US won't change anything. www.cnn.com/us/live-news...
