And whether the public knows it or not, he's impacted many of their lives repeatedly in his role as an anatomy consultant for Disney, DreamWorks, etc. - he consults with those studios to ensure that their characters & creatures all look legit and move in an anatomically accurate fashion.
Other folks have already mentioned Thomas Holtz & Jim Kirkland, so allow me to throw Stuart Sumida into the mix. He's been in a fair number of documentaries & is also currently president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Good guy, good scientist.
