Latin American leaders divided on U.S. action to capture Maduro coreykane.substack.com/p/latin-amer...
Large part of Maduro's security team killed in U.S. action-Venezuela defense minister reut.rs/3YogK7K
At least 40 people were killed in the U.S. attack on Venezuela early Saturday, including military personnel and civilians, according to a senior Venezuelan official.
President Trump said on Saturday that Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as Venezuela’s interim president and would act as a partner in letting the U.S. run the country. Less than two hours later, Rodríguez made clear she viewed the U.S. as an illegal invader that must be rejected.
Trump is making a lot of ambitious promises regarding Venezuela. But its current government is still in place, and are not cooperating publicly. Hard to see how any promise of Trump's can be achieved right now given those facts.
Panama's President José Raúl Mulino says he won't recognize Delcy Rodríguez as the legitimate president of Venezuela, speaking on Radio Panamá. He had previously refused to recognize Maduro.
Delcy Rodríguez says she only recognizes Maduro as the legitimate Venezuelan president. Condemns the US operation and gives no indication of cooperation with the US, per Venezuelan-state run Telesur. www.telesurtv.net/delcy-venezu...
LITERALLY NO VENEZUELAN ASKED for President Nicolás Maduro to be removed and opposition leader María Corina Machado ("very nice woman” who lacks “support” and “respect”) sidelined so the Trump administration could "run" Venezuela through Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro's vice president

And Panama essentially had part of its territory already carved out for U.S. military usage and bases at the time.
The 1989 occupation of Panama involved 27,000 U.S. military personnel. Venezuela has 12 times the land area of Panama, 6.5 times the population, and a much larger array of armed and criminal groups.

No guarantees that the military just surrenders either, could require a legitimate all out war
Trump saying in press conference that the U.S. will "run" Venezuela as it transitions, but absent details. Its military, Its government is still in place, country is around 29 million population.
APNewsAlert: CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Trump says US is 'going to run' Venezuela until safe transition of power can take place.
Fair. I'm not here to debate what's right or legal for the U.S., just noting that it might do little to effect the situation for Venezuelans. Do little to change who holds control there.
I'm no expert. But if Venezuela simply follow normal succession of power and current VP Delcy Rodríguez takes over, it's just a bombing and a high-profile arrest and prosecution, no? Doesn't even seem like this effects the oil situation, yet.
TBH, hard to see how the regime changes if there's no further action in Venezuela, as said to be the case per Sen. Mike Lee. This was a party-led regime, with buy-in across the government ministries and military leaders. Not a personalist dictatorship that depended on Maduro.
Snatching Maduro and his wife is no guarantee of regime change in Venezuela on its own. It's a whole party embedded across the government and military. It's not a personalist dictatorship that depended uniquely on Maduro.
Mike Lee says Marco Rubio told him the US govt does not anticipate more action in Venezuela. Seems unlikely that simply capturing Maduro and his wife is going to end the Chavista dictatorship on its own.
Perhaps de jure, but Maduro isn't really a key charismatic figure holding the movement together. He was just one Chavez lieutenant among many. And subsequent messages from people in Vzla's govt and military don't yet indicate any concessions.
Was an invasion and occupation in Panama though, none of that the case right now. Also took a long time to nab Noriega and Noriega's government had been removed by that point. Chavistas still in Vzla have conceded nothing so far.
