But they never thought that Meritocracy applied to them. If they did, Musk would have been fired after he fired and clumsily rehired the people who safeguard our nuclear secrets. Or when he bungled funding for Ebola prevention. And now Michael Waltz divulging classified war plans in a group chat.
I believe this idea of “Meritocracy” was Thiel and Musk’s influence over the administration. It’s sounds reasonable; reward for outstanding work. But it’s really a way to exploit the majority who are getting the job done while elevating a few. It’s a carrot on a stick. It’s capitalism in a nutshell.
I knew immediately that gone were the days of cost of living raises for meeting the requirements of the job. I was RIGHT! “Meritocracy” is an idea that’s been floating around the CEO world for a few years as a word that indicates a big change but is more palatable to the uneducated masses.
Four years ago my former company was bought by a private equity corp and they had an “all-hands” meeting to onboard new acquisitions. In that first meeting they described the company going forward as a “Meritocracy”. I deduced what the word meant immediately but it was the first time I’d heard it.
