The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to call for submissions for the 2025 AoIR Dissertation Awards. To be eligible for the AoIR Dissertation Awards, a PhD dissertation in the area of internet research must have been filed in the 2024 calendar year. *Nominations must be received by 12 May 2025*. All methods and disciplines are welcome. This year, because we are taking our conference to Brazil, where there is a large academic community that writes in Portuguese, we will also be awarding a Dissertation Award for a doctoral dissertation written in Portuguese. This is an occasional award; we will consider offering a similar award when holding the conference in countries in which it makes sense to do so. Submissions details: * A nomination letter that explains why the dissertation is deserving of the award and how it contributes to internet research * A PDF copy of the dissertation should be emailed to dissertationaward [at] aoir.org * The graduate or their supervisor must be a member of AoIR (by 12 May 2025) * Self-nominations are permitted * βFiled in 2024β means that the dissertation has been fully defended, all edits complete, and filed/published in 2024 (this date will usually appear on the front cover or front pages of the dissertation). A letter that the studentβs committee has approved the PhD can also establish this. The recipients of these awards will be announced mid-year 2025. In addition to winning a cash prize, the individual will be presented an award during the Association General Meeting(AGM) at the #AoIR2025 conference in October. In addition, and if relevant, AoIR will contribute up to US$1000 towards the cost of making a publication from the winnersβ dissertation Open Access. (Please note, this is not the same as Article Processing Payments; we will support publication in reputable journals only.) Full details: https://aoir.org/2025dissawardnominations/
Submissions are open for the 2025 AoIR Dissertation Awards for internet research PhD dissertations filed in 2024. Aligning with #AoIR2025 in Brazil, we will also be offering an Award for a doctoral dissertation written in Portuguese.

The book βReading the Room: Lessons on Pedagogy and Curriculum from the Gender and Sexuality Studies Classroomβ edited by Natalie Kouri-Towe held in front of a chalk board
Perhaps more important now than ever before - canβt wait to dig into this pivotal collection, @nataliekt.bsky.social!
People laugh when I say I study dating apps but today I got to think (and write) hard about how even apps like Tinder (re)create inequities in the most mundane yet intimate parts of our everyday lives, and that seems to matter a lot

The best choice I made when signing up to Bluesky was ticking the box to say Iβm interested in nature/animals. Now at least I get cute foxes and cool mushrooms in between the doom.
I hate and love this and am going to find a way to use it in my teaching.
I have a sense that teaching is the most meaningful yet undervalued thing profs do. I doubt my ability to challenge the institutional undervaluation but can you share a moment with me from your semester that illustrates its meaningfulness?

I think youβre right about this, esp destigmatization. But the tech/industry and government/policy levels need to come into play - why is it so easy to create these images and to do so without repercussions? Thatβs a question no amount of sex ed or parental digital literacy can address.

I was relieved to find @catworkers.bsky.social on this app.
Now, can I slowly abandon X/Twitter or is this a 'time is of the essence' sort of thing as it keeps getting worse in terms of privacy and security?
Well, after trying to make LinkedIn a thing, this seems much easier. Welcome (back? home?) everyone...
