I think now what I thought then, and I am an Oasis fan, it’s not a good album. No amount of analysis changes the fact that the songs just aren’t there.
I think it is more than fair to take the stance that post-Pinkerton is an entirely different band without the playing and influence of Matt Sharp. The band that existed with him is a different band than without, and IMO, a lesser band.

Sometimes I feel like the better songs on this album are woefully underrated. To me, it's MMJ at their absolute best.

I feel like they entered into their Undercover of the Night phase around ATYCLB and frankly...they've been near unlistenable and intolerable since then. But when they were good....they were truly special. Now it feels like every Edge/Bono quote was written by Mr. AI Press Agent.

A disgrace frankly. An indie artist usually has *no one* behind a release...no marketing, no reach, limited fans if any. Discover something! Would be so much more impressive than being the nth reviewer of the latest (insert "signed act" with hundreds of thousands of listens) album.
Mellon Collie, both at the time it came out, and today, still feels like a step down to me. Siamese Dream was perfect.

I remember seeing them in a venue when this came out that couldn't have had more than 20 people in it.....they weren't just a good band, they were a great one, with a wonderful songwriter and their first 3 albums are scattered with amazing quaint pop masterpieces.
