I know that LL has concerns about lawsuits and reasons to maintain basic IT security. I know nothing of the sort about Bonniebots. If the owner is some broke hobbyist in a trailer a wrongful death suit against them wouldn't do much good. I'm *FINE* with LL aggregating the information.
But there is a HUGE population in SL of people who are closeted in day to day life, and experiment with gender on SL. I have SERIOUS concerns about some 46 year old teacher in Texas being outed in their community or church for "being a tranny" online. And being subject to violence.
I'm sure LL tracks that, or buys the data. But I also trust that LL has at least the *normal* level of IT Security. I don't trust that Bonniebots is not run out of somebody's living room. I don't trust they have any particular ethics position, or privacy policy. That said *I* don't care. for me
Let's face it: Lelutka is a hell of a lot more likely to pay someone to stand all day and explain mesh heads to passerby in multiple languages than LL is. And if their competitor is set up across the way doing the same thing. That's not *bad.* It's more coverage.
You actually already have the model for this. You run the SLXXB events on roughly the same model as www.seraphimsl.com/category/fai... most marketing events. Why not make arrival regions more like the fairs, where people see a selection of goods, and group promotions?
Yes some people will scream bloody murder, but if you set fair criteria for how to be part of the resources that LL shows people at login, most will go along with it, and everyone will benefit. We all just want residents who know how to function in a club or store.
If you can partner with MadPea, you can partner with other existing groups. Would not the body makers have a serious interest in helping maintain a "learn about mesh" land? Harness the talent you have, in a "Public/Private Partnership." Clubs, etc., could trade mentorship for directed traffic
I think newbie regions are a box people will want out of, (though the old "solve a few puzzles to show you know how to move in the world" might not hurt). Still, I think you leverage residents *wanting * to set up intro areas that are *recommended* for new players through say a TP HUD at reg.
This is very well said. I do think you have a barrier with phones. SL is, for most users, a primarily text-based form of communication. If I wanted to talk to people voice, I'd use Discord. Maybe phone users can fit in better in "mostly-voice" communities, but I don't know of many of those.
But if it were integrated somewhat, people wouldn't have the hair pulling frustration. Imagine a standard game that pretended premium goods didn't exist and mandated frustrating RL reading, comparison and often mistaken purchases for players to figure out what they needed to actually have fun.
Like everyone in...every other game...people could spend their 2 days trolling around with basic equipment, then decide that they would need to invest in premium stuff if they want to actually have fun. Most Gamers tend to *accept* this now.
World of Tanks does not try to hide the fact that you will need to pay money to buy a tank to be any good. L$ exists for a REASON. Integrating existing sellers as "premium" buys at arrival like...EVERY OTHER GAME would de-mystify the process. Like it or not, it's TRUE. Either you invest L$ or time
You're not wrong. But at this point, any Linden av, no matter how good (and Senra isn't), is going to be widely perceived as "noob." Partnerships with the existing industry would help. It's not as if LL doesn't partner with them in other ways.
I think the real issue is places may be "open to the public" but not "open to anything." If I run a bookstore, or cafe, I am not open to, screaming random obscenities, making insulting sexual propositions and disrupting ongoing events. 1 and 2 day old avs DO represent an outsized share of this.
Agreed - I get that LL has to be "neutral" to some extent in terms of businesses/groups. But setting up the equivalent of industry trade associations, and rewarding groups and businesses that meet standards in accessibility, uniformity of experience, etc. is no more bizarre than "Free MadPea."
TL:DR Respect the culture that already exists, all of it, and, understand when you dump people into world whose vocabulary is limited to "u" and emojis you make residents into unpaid volunteer trainers for an Eternal September. Respect if they choose not to take that on, and love them anyway.
I actually *don't* ban new residents, but many of them are ignorant of the culture and lack the resources/willingness to learn. We're willing to converse in any language, but our "typical" new resident visitor walks around without paying attention to local or IM, crashing into things.
Trying to be "the next big thing" because the term "metaverse" briefly trended three years ago is not doing SL any favors. Like Kelly Ortberg at Boeing go back to basics. Treasure what you have and scale accordingly.
That said, instead of new strategies to get zoomers on a phone, consider that SL has one of the best educated, most literate, most diverse populations of any platform, that it has high entry barriers, both technical and cultural and takes intelligence and acumen to navigate.
The answer would be "educate new players on our diverse cultures," and things that are common to all of us, like reading the rules in a new location, "reading the room" before blurting out random nonsense, etc. I get that's hard to do.
