It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

It'd be one thing if the Trump administration was cleverly carrying out a fascist agenda but they're doing it very sloppily and still largely succeeding which I think makes it feel worse

Know this rhetoric is a daily occurrence now but christ “incompatible migrants” is phrasing indistinguishable from the most vile neo-nazi screeds & is the type of dehumanizing language that can & will lead to the unthinkable

Opinion | Musk Said No One Has Died Since Aid Was Cut. That Isn’t True. (Gift Article)
A journey through the front lines of global poverty shows that when the world’s richest men slash aid for the world’s poorest children, the result is sickness, starvation and death.
Elon Musk says that no one has died because he slashed humanitarian aid. I went to South Sudan to check if that's true. It's not. Meet Peter, Achol and Evan, ages 10, 8 and 5. The reckless actions of the world's richest men are killing the world's poorest kids www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Ten years ago if you had written a dystopian SF story in which the person in charge of U.S. public health did a press event at a fast food joint to say that fried food is good but measles vaccines cause measles the ghost of Philip K. Dick would have said that you were being too bleak and unrealistic

Elon Musk's only profitable company, Tesla, has created a cumulative grand total net income of $34 billion in its more than 20 years of existence.
That's less than the total amount of US federal subsidies his empire has collectively received.
The economics of Elon Musk are as bad as the politics.

Notice how it’s always “the Bible must inform our laws!” until it comes to the verses about welcoming the immigrant, helping the poor, feeding the hungry, bringing healthcare to the sick, forgiving debts, not charging interest, caring for our planet, laying down our swords, or loving our neighbors.

A new @reuters.com poll finds Americans have a dim view of many of the Trump administration's blizzard of executive actions, including the Jan. 6 pardons and his effort to limit birthright citizenship.
But they *really* don't like the Gulf of America thing.

Does anyone else remember when Elon was like "if anyone knows how to end world hunger for 6 billion USD, I'll fund it" and UNICEF was like "we're going to spend a month to make a plan to end world hunger for 6 billion USD
and Elon is going to fund it" and Elon was like "actually, nah" and then bought Twitter instead?
I think that was one of the worst things I'll ever see in my life.

I still think that should be the thing for which he's the most famous. It should be brought up every time he's mentioned. In any news article, any interview, any history book. "Elon Musk, who was offered a chance to end world hunger and turned it down." Put it on his fucking gravestone.
“put it on his fucking gravestone”

Two highlighted contracts for $9,999,999 each.
Let's see how the intrepid Elon inspired team at DOGE - the folks who are currently examining your tax records - are doing! Today they put up their their idea of "open data" which they call a "Wall of Receipts". And look here - two cancelled DEIA contracts for $9,999,999. Wow, they saved $20M! 1/

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

I spent hours last night wading through X threads about DOGE, Musk, and the elimination of USAID.
Here are ELEVEN THINGS that jumped out at me about Musk and his interlocutors.🧵
(1) Musk et al. talk as if they truly believe USAID has been a hotbed of corruption and "evil." But this conviction...

So Trump hurt America's relationship with Canada and made markets wobble all to "get" Canada to do things Canada had announced back in December in coordination with the Biden administration, do I have that right?

Love that our news-monitoring anxiety options are:
a) take little sips of poison all day long, try to shake it off between doses
b) wait to chug a gallon of the stuff until end of day or in the morning
c) ignore it entirely and be surprised when Trump-branded tanks roll down your street oh no

Trump spent his first week pardoning cop beaters, renaming bodies of water, and trying to shut down Medicaid, food pantries and senior centers.
He didn't do anything to make groceries or housing more affordable.
He's breaking every promise he made to the American people.

Trump has always enthusiastically welcomed the explicit promotion of his political agenda from the pulpit.
But the idea that a bishop would criticize rather than endorse his policies from a theological perspective ... see that's going too far.

Trump’s anti-trans Executive Order is bad BUT it technically defines everyone as female. It states:
“'Female' means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell."
Since all fetuses "at conception" are female, Trump just defined EVERYONE as female.
