An ink drawing of a young man posing in a mesh crop top, shorts, sand shoes, and knee socks.
More marker hatching experimentation - I think I'm getting into a good groove with these, slowly looking more viable as a style. Still some things I'll tweak, but I'm gonna keep iterating on these til I find The One that looks like what I want it to look like!

A pastel painting of a wall covered in light blue plaster, with a large chunk of the plaster missing, revealing strongly coloured blue tiles underneath.
Here's today's pastel practice - a Renfrew pub wall, plaster and concrete crumbling to reveal the beautiful original tiles underneath. Pretty happy with this one.

a uh plea if anyone has had any joy getting a 2024+ iMac to talk to a USB flatbed scanner
I'm on scanner no. 3 and the problem is clearly the computer now (not even sure if 15 yr old+ scanner no. 1 was broken to begin with) and we're still just not communicating (:

I regret to inform you that there is indeed a small gang (flock?) of doves that are distinctly not Woodpigeons that terrorise the local blackbirds π The Woodpigeons mostly like to fight amongst themselves.
All the corvids work together to get the snackies and therefore they are my favourites π

Counterpoint - the doves are *the* worst bullies in my back garden π
For some reason they wait for smaller birds to start eating the seed I leave on the ground, and swoop in to displace them.

"The Ship's Queer" sounds very much like there is one, ONE person on board who is gay, and his name is Jeremy, and everyone likes him and would throw hands at any lubber who would dare insult him.

Conversely, I think I don't actually remember specifics of photos etc. and instead recreate them from vectors or first principles or however my brain stores them. I think if it's a photo that I've seen over and over, maybe I'd remember that, but I remember the *object* rather than the image!

From my experience, it's less tracing and more like... Almost like drawing a witness sketch? Like, someone is telling you "this is what I saw, this is what it looks like", but the person is you and you're showing it to you but in your mind so the replication through your arm isn't totally perfect?

For me, refs are more making sure things look like what they look like in real life - my visual image probably isn't all that detailed unless I make a specific effort to zero in on them, but doing that for eeeeverything is a *lot* of energy.
I think my initial hypothesis was more or less correct!

Thanks for sharing! I actually think we have very similar processes overall - I believe the key differences is that I don't always need references, because I hold that initial visual in my head, but I definitely need those construction lines to help me translate it to page.
