world-altering decisions are being made by a cabal of gambling addicts hell bent on self enrichment no matter the cost to humanity, we should look into that.

Alysa Liu Is Skating Again, Her Way This Time

Her father fled China because he organized student protests during Tiananmen. He was a political refugee. The story of this family, and Alysa Liu, would have played out very differently today. This is what we're losing. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/19/w...

Companies either knowingly or unknowingly fall into git flow because they want to move in "lockstep", meaning teams can operate in parallel on the same code base, but must always integrate on a common branch. This is always a painful crash course on how git works because it creates conflicts.

My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

Hey, you!

Remember to do stuff just for the joy of doing it.

You don't need to transform everything in content for the social media (unless this makes you happy).

Enjoy that hobby yourself, no need to think about monetizing it.

The reward should be your inner joy/peace first.

Always.

It feels good to catch an age old system ordering bug by running a flaky test 10 times and then fixing it and seeing the test is no longer flaky. Switched to nextest tonight after seeing it has a stress test option (and is way faster than `cargo test`).

I have spent my entire adult life being lectured by Republican politicians and conservative legal movement types about how important it is to preserve the sacred constitutional right to self-defense of *specifically this person* and then secret police murdered him in the street

thank you, I on and off scream this exact thing internally. Imagine making a point that something is bad and instead of just agreeing someone goes "yeah but it's always sucked". like that cynic nihilism should be a sign it's time for self reflection. instead it just absolves bad behavior

snide smug "America has always been like this" shit is so fuckin caustic. yeah sure you're the only person who has the right theoretical lens for the long arc of history. go ahead and feel fuckin superior about that and shirk responsibility for a better future. post away. have a good time. fuck you.

Every single thing you're seeing from Minneapolis is as impressive as it looks. It is that brutally cold out. That is a stonking huge number of people. Those utterly filled city blocks are that outrageously Midwesternly wide and broad. Getting everyone there did push Metro Transit to the limit.

Habeas petitions are a fairly extraordinary remedy — even attorneys in immigration practice don't just crank out piles of these every day — so MaryJo Webster's analysis puts in sharp relief that even if some fraction of these are meritless, a staggering number of people are being held without cause.

No! The criticism of the Dems isn't that they never win elections, it's that they don't use power to solve the problems that got us here. Elite impunity, concentration of wealth, the unitary executive. Winning is only step 1

X post by Keith Edwards reads: "BREAKING: an image has leaked showing Trump using a walker moments after he signed an executive order banning states from regulating AI"

Image shows President Trump using a walker

Below the image is a proposed community note awaiting ratings. The community note reads: "No state is allowed to do anything about this photo." It links to a NY Times article about Trump's new executive order against states regulating AI.

(Yes, the image of Trump with the walker is AI-generated)

this might be the first time i've seen a community note on x that serves as a punch line to the tweet

Miami Elects First Democratic Mayor in Nearly 30 Years

Democrat Eileen Higgins wins the Miami mayor’s race! Higgins is the first Democrat to win the race in nearly 30 years. She defeated by about 18 points a Republican Emilio Gonzalez endorsed by Trump.

A good sign for Democrats before the midterms!

A formal statement from the University of Oklahoma appears on a white background with red accents. The text explains that the university is reviewing a student’s concern about grading and religious freedom. It states that college leaders contacted the student promptly, conducted a formal grade appeals process, and ensured no academic harm occurred. It also notes that the student filed a claim of illegal discrimination based on religious beliefs, which triggered a university review process. The graduate student instructor was placed on administrative leave, and a full-time professor assumed teaching duties for the rest of the semester. The statement reaffirms OU’s commitment to fairness, respect, and protecting students’ rights to express sincerely held religious beliefs. At the bottom is the University of Oklahoma logo.

It's not great that a student can turn in a bad essay but vaguely point to the Bible and religious beliefs as an excuse for not following the actual assignment and terrible writing. That's not what college is supposed to be.

The professor did nothing wrong but she was pulled off the course anyways.
