As an admirer of The Economist, sad to see it recycling garbage about chicken nuggets and the ECHR. The former wasnβt why a manβs deportation was halted. The latter worked well in the upper tribunal that decided he should be deported, after all.
Last week Robert Spano, Jens Elo Peters Rytter, @colmocinneide.bsky.social, @alicedonald.bsky.social and @profveronika.bsky.social discussed the future of the European Convention on Human Rights, including what Denmark has done.

The Conservativesβ plan to leave the ECHR is an attack on workers' rights - @pwielt.bsky.social on the importance of the ECHR and HRA for workers' rights, giving example of recent Mercer case re carer suspended for her role in industrial action, found to violate Art 11 www.tuc.org.uk/blogs/conser...

Should the UK leave the European Convention on Human Rights?

At our recent event, our trustee @alicedonald.bsky.social spoke about the power of economic and social rights, not just to protect people in times of hardship, but to help everyone thrive.
At Just Fair, we believe these rights should work as both protection and empowerment. πβοΈ
In jumping off the precipice of ECHR withdrawal, the Conservative Party is aping - and legitimising - a policy which in the rest of Europe is only espoused by the far right verfassungsblog.de/badge-of-dis...
And here's a simple explainer too of the relationship between the ECHR/GFA with @alicedonald.bsky.social.
*From availble data, we know the number of successful appeals was 0.73% of the total sentenced foreign national offenders.

"Does the ECHR stop states from controlling their borders?"
No. The ECHR Court emphasises migration policies are up to states themselves.
"But the ECHR stops the UK from deporting foreign criminals."
No, it doesn't.
Successful human rights-based appeals against deportation are very rare.
Important to hear Hilary Benn affirm, in his Labour Conference Speech, that the official position is that the UK leaving the ECHR would indeed undermine the UK's commitments under the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement 1998:
The Conservatives look set to announce withdrawal from the #ECHR as policy.
This reckless move would fly jn the face of evidence both as to the benefits of ECHR membership and the costs of withdrawal - including to efforts to control irregular migration

Quote from our post by Alice Donald: βPushback against the ECtHR over immigration is neither new nor confined to the UK. But what once sounded like fringe rhetoric is now being echoed at the very centre of British Politics.β
Starting this Sunday, the UK Conservatives will hold their annual party conference and possibly adopt a new flagship policy: withdrawal from the ECHR.
That would legitimise the playbook of the far-right, warns ALICE DONALD (@alicedonald.bsky.social).

Vernon Bogdanor isn't wrong to flag the ECHR's importance given the minimal constraints on Westminster's legislative power. And that rights matter for minorities. But they matter for everyone - they are a cornerstone to the legitimacy of a system of government:
